Coilwhine!! :(

Yip! I know, that's why I said it would put his Psu to the Test :D

Power Connectors: 2x 8-pin + 1x 6-pin required.

Either way he's going to have to sort something out.

My PSU has all them connectors lol...

Im not really into overclocking so surely at default clocks it should suck as much as any other 290X?

If you're confident it will cope, then go for one. No point going for another 970 when clearly they're not playing well with your setup. What's the point in taking another gamble on a 970 if you're adamant a 290 will run fine.

Might be OK.

If I were you, set your Gigabyte running Heaven as I suggest for a few hours or overnight if possible, it might cure it. Also power with two separate rails!

My choices now are,

1. AMD 290X lightning

2. Try second G1

3. Try another brand?

4. Give up and slit wrist!

I'd have thought your choices, in no particular order, were:

- Try AMD

- Buy one of the two OCUK cards that come with a zero coil whine guarantee

- Replace your PSU

To do anything else would be insane.

Bit late at night but the coilwhine seems to be getting better! :D

I played this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktbhw0v186Q while i was gaming to hide the noise but when i muted it the coilwhine is not too bad anymore.

I think the bedding in thing kinda works? I was only playing COH2 so nothing massivelt demanding, max FPS was like 150 but the coilwhine really has died down! The Evga just stayed loud forever...

Maybe the song lulled the card, i dunno. The Evga card kept freezing too, i put it down to Nvidia drivers in COH2 but this card doesnt, so i think the Evga has other issues than coilwhine.

Im gonna keep a hold of this i think, ive also ordered a surround sound headset lol! Just for backup ;)

^^ OCUK, your Christmas present has arrived early. :D

For as emotional as you were at times Nines11, it just shows how great OCUK are with their customers. I think I'd have sent you a GTX 970 jigsaw puzzle edition if I were Gibbo (joking).

Enjoy your holiday gaming. Glad you're happy.

Good to hear, if you do as I say in Heaven 4.0, low res, minimum details so its in the 400-600fps region it should cure any slight whine you have.

Like all new stuff, everything likes to be run in a little and everything quietens down once up to operating temperature/tolerances.

A car engine is loud/noisy when cold, a light bulb can flicker when you first switch it on, this is really no different.

Let us know how it goes! :)

After reading this thread I thought I would try and listen for any coilwhine on my G1 970.

I have a

SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold"

power supply and have absolutely zero whine on my card, well not until I hit over 4000fps on the exit screen of the heaven benchmark tool. I really do think it is all down to the combination of PS and card.

I would recommend upgrading your PSU to a proper one.

Lol the PSU is not the problem here... as mentioned a few times even in this thread, no whine on the same PSU!

Further testing will be done today, i was pretty tired last night haha.

It still screams at 400+ fps but im sure all cards do that Gibbo?

I dont think any games get 400+ fps though, not with decent settings anyway.

Is MSI AB the best software to cap fps?

It also boosts to 1400mhz at default so i suppose thats a nice bonus? Or is that the norm lol?

Got my evga 970 gtx SC few months ago prob has a bit of coilwhine but not that bothered most pc gamers i know have headphones on most of the time surprised people can even hear it after playing games.

Each to there own i guess :p

Headsets do totally cure it but its reselling the card down the line that could be a problem.

Some cards at 400fps that are good ones might make very faint noise on a good PSU, to the point you can only hear it with your head next to the card.

If it is screaming and is easily heard then no that is not normal, I'd not expect that until over 1000fps, but it could be impossible to fix due to frequencies etc. etc.

This is why FPS limits are good.

We consider normal usage upto 150fps region, if your playing games that run at 400fps then increase your resolution, detail settings etc or play newer games. ;)

Nines11

Just tested your EVGA card, here is my findings:

Tested on Antec 1200W:
Heaven 4.0 lowest settings with 400fps, whine is audible without putting my head next to the card but it is not loud and in an closure I'd struggle to hear it over other case/cooling fans.

So I put details to maximum and strangely enough it still made the same amount of noise, so whereas not loud to my standards but our PSU could be helping a lot with noise level for sure it is by no means a screamer as you described, but I can hear it on our open test bench just about.

So you shall be refunded but if this card was as loud as you were saying then it could be your PSU contributing or a combination of components as its no screamer, 7990's in my experience had far greater coilwhine.

Gibbo personally tested the card and it wasn't bad at all.

It must be the PSU causing the issue as we expected.

However I will process a refund on the card for you anyway.

I hope this helps

Bailey
