Secondly, the programme only proved that the brand of coke is hugely important, not that people don't prefer the taste.

Of course it proved it, it proved it when they came up with a formula that their own market testing proved that people preferred, right up until they found out it wasn't the original recipe. Then they wanted a flavour back that was inferior to all the taste testing coke had done themselves.

The results of the blind taste testing had them thinking their flavour was wrong, until people could see the brand name.

Not quite. Coke did trials testing their original recipe vs the new one. They didn't compare it to Pepsi. Whilst the coke trials very rather extensive, the Pepsi challenge was just a marketing ploy rather than a scientific test and so can't be relied on. Therefore you can't say that people can't tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke.

Also, poll needs a Pancake option. I feel the need to press a button but am indifferent to both options.

People choose coke due to marketing and image and not because of the taste, coke are the best marketers in the soft drinks business, if they were to actually be blindfolded and sat down to do a taste test with 10 different cola type drinks on the market, coke would probably be average at best. its mediocre taste and too gassy, apparently the fact that it is too gassy is supposed to be refreshing as the bubbles pop in your mouth. Load of nonsense though.

Pepsi > Coke
Sprite > 7UP
Fanta > Tango

Rubbish...:p

I prefer Coke because it is that little bit gassier and tarter. The only Pepsi I really like is Pepsi max, odd because I hate diet coke, just tastes like brown water...

Oh and Orangina>Fanta+Tango... Proper bits in it!

Didn't new coke flop more due to politics than marketing/taste?

Americans hated the fact the "traditional" American drink taste had changed... Somehow that was unamerican or something...

I much prefer Pepsi to Coke.

Coke has this awful... "something" about the flavour that I just can't quite pinpoint but I don't like it. Postmix coke isnt quite as bad.

Coke Zero is quite nice though :)

Exactly, it flopped due to marketing and brand image of being a age old American recipe (which it is) and didn't like the idea of changing it. If they launched it as a separate product, like they did with diet coke, it could have been a very different story.

Made me laugh... Personally I think marketing means nothing for this..

I've tried both and drink Coke more because it tastes nice unlike pepsi. The only sort of advertising I see for either is when I'm watching TV.. even then I never watch the adverts so.

We did a taste test back when I was in school.

There were 3 options:
  • Coke
  • Pepsi
  • Generic own brand
TBH I wonder how people couldn't taste the difference.. Own brand coke (cola) is just nasty.

Hell, it's even possible to identify where the coke is from (bottle, can, glass, pub-though that's obvious)

.

I never said they did it against pepsi, I said coke proved how much of it is down to marketing rather than taste because of trials against their own brand. People preferred the new flavour in taste tests, but hated it when they found out there was 'change' and the old flavour was ditched. If that doesn't show people buying because of marketing and brand then nothing will.

The new taste was better but bombed.

The colours are the wrong way round. Coke should be red, Pepsi blue. :p

Pepsi.

Completely indifferent tbh but if asked I would probably say Coke, although I don't recal being out and about and it being a choice anywhere :)

I voted Coke ... as I just don't like Pepsi at all ... the flavour is just too sweet for me. Pepsi Max is even worse ... horrible stuff ...

Most of the time if I have to drink a cola drink it tends to be Coke Zero ... switched not long after it came out and now prefer it to even normal Coke.
