Commonwealth Games 2014

Both the triathlons were excellent. The BBC coverage on TV is a bit vague, but the iPlayer listings are very good this time so it's easy to find the event you're looking for.

Every time I switch on the BBC there appears to be another newsreader on air for a few minutes. Looks like they've all gone to Glasgow on a jolly.

Call me an idiot but how does the 1 vs 1 cycling work, one guy goes in front inner lane, they both twiddle along for a bit then they decide to go for it. Doesn't the guy in front have an advantage, the other guy to win has to come right around him(or her)?

Sort of, but the guy behind has the advantage of slipstreaming and saving energy, so although he has to go further, has the ability to save energy until the last straight where you often see riders power through on the outside to win.

So what's the percentage on guys winning from behind compared to the ones at the front looking over their shoulder, is it roughly 50/50?

Not entirely sure, I would say probably favours the rider behind by a couple of per cent at most.

You can't really see it on the TV, but because of the banking there is a huge downward slope from the outer side of the curve onto the straight. If you're the guy behind, you HAVE to pass on the outside and the guy in front is not allowed to cross that line drawn on the track. You get a huge catapult effect from the sudden drop in height and many riders prefer to attack from second place because they can blast past the guy in front. That's why they run best of three, so each rider gets their turn in front.

Interesting that in the boxing, they're not wearing headgear. I'm wondering why that is, as I'm sure they normally do in the olympics, so why not in the commonwealth games. Not that I'm complaining as it makes it better to watch without.

Have a look here but effectively the risk of concussion appears to be lower when the boxers aren't wearing headgear. However oddly that doesn't apply for the women and they still wear headgear...

Really looking forward to seeing the rugby sevens and women's weightlifting tomorrow.

Too many swimming medals IMO. They have changed events like cycling to avoid (UK in the Olympic case) a dominant nation of a single sport leading the medal table on just a few sports.

Yet pool events have 50m, 100m etc etc with the same swimmers in every event. Do we have 50m running events?

If your a good swimming/cycling nation you will dominant the table. On top of that swimming is dead boring to watch yet goes on throughout the entire tournament.

Indeed.

Australia leading right now but if not for Swimming and Cycling they wouldn't be as strong.

England and Scotland have decent representation in multiple disciplines so far.

Agree the swimming is utter ****. Far too many medals.

Men's marathon today was great, Australian fella was out of this world, such a great performance and the 5000m was a very good race as well. Let's hope the athletics keeps on delivering!

I was arguing the same thing during the Olympics, should do away with the various forms and just have 50m, 100m, etc like the running.

Rugby Sevens was a bit of a disappointing performance from Scotland today but the South African team was superbly quick and in fact it looks like they might just win it. Lots of other entertaining games going on as well there, in some ways it was almost more entertaining with the teams who weren't going to be troubling the successful nations so I enjoyed Papua New Guinea vs Sri Lanka more than say New Zealand vs Kenya as they were much more evenly matched.

The women's 63kg weightlifting was pretty good as well, some amazing lifts in there and some real disappointment for some of them too.
