Computers for under £25 will help 11 million disadvantaged Brits on benefits get online

its a great idea. gets rid of those old ex corporate pc's that nobody wants and gets people on the internet.

no surprise to see there's some completely retarded dailymail idiots bashing this.. :/

To me it just sounds like the same old government solutions, its like they are a teen with a new credit cards sometimes. They just think of these solutions and spend spend spend. <Insert justification here>
As opposed to what?.

What evidence backed ideas would you implement if you could?.

What would you change, for what objective & what evidence supports your desired methodology?.

Its at a whim. They don't consider the full impact, they don't even care half the time.

My evidence suggests that the government should stop spending money.
What evidence? & for what purpose?.

What will be the impact of the government "not spending money", what does the evidence suggest would happen if we actually got the capitalist dystopia you so crave?.

Do you think living standards for the population would go up?

Do you think crime would go up?

Do you think infant mortality & poverty would go up?.

Does the above concern you?.

I'm just trying to get a feel for what your actually goals really are & if you've considered the impact of the kind of changes you support.

Best post in the thread.

Nate

I thought it was a terrible idea.

Here you go, here's your Raspberry Pi
Do I eat it?
No, it's a computer
How do I get started?
Well you'll need a 4 gig SD card, a keyboard & mouse and then you will need to put an Operating System on it
How do I do that?
Just go on the internet, there's plenty of threads about it.

Didn't that guy on Skint just buy himself an £1800 TV?

Just because people are on benefits doesn't mean they're in absolute poverty...

quite... how much does the average smoker spend per year... how many council flats have sky dishes....

the recent documentary series following police in Blackpool was illuminating... at midnight on 'payday' they see a bunch of people (in their pajamas) queuing at a cash point to withdraw their benefits... incidents of disorder/violence go up in the days immediately afterwards as they proceed to get drunk and spend it...

PRISM ,GCHQ surveillance Are having wet dreams about it already/

how can you have dream about something you already thought up, gave to the politicians to hand out. Remember these computers will be given to poor 'ethnics' aswell (and i mean no disrespect)

think about it. before you blabber out some inane drivel about your fellow 'scum' mankind. Sounding off like nazi citizens, you are no different.

Facebook and Skype monitoring. NSA prism scandal. A £25 computer for all the 'lower poor easy to 'radicalize' because they have nothing' people to communicate across networks that people are listening too.. they needed a way to get full saturation with network technology

I didn't have a computer or the internet in my family until I got a job and paid for it myself after finishing school, if I wanted to use a computer I used the school's either during or after school or the local libraries. What ever happened to earning what you need/have?

I did much better (in most instances) than the children on the same council estate as me, many of which had their own computers and Internet connections all paid for by the state or on the never-never. The biggest difference was the interaction I had with my parents, not with a computer screen.

whatever happened to sharing thing with people who are less fortunate than you?

Isn't that the point of libraries and schools; sharing in an efficient and cost effective way?

Please note that I was someone who was less fortunate than I am now, I worked bloody hard to earn what I have (which even now is still vastly beneath many people's standard of living), why is it unfair for me to expect others to do the same instead of just thinking they can sit on their arse and that my wife and I will provide for them?

Well done chap, I have major respect for self made men. :)

I think its actually part or a bigger plan to cut costs and stop the excuses of people that they don't have net access that they cant find work.

Are we still arguing that having internet access is a luxury ? I don't think so anymore. I think its a pretty basic right in a western country.

Are the job centre not rolling out some new portal thing for JSA people where most of the stuff is online?

Im in Sweden and have been to talk to their equivalent as im considering relocating here and the benefit system here is very very computer orientated with most correspondence online and monthly face to face meetings.

The UK government poaches most of its ideas from Sweden, this wouldn't surprise me too.

The last paragraph I quality. Online banking - has my dole money arrived in my account! Can't see the point in this really. It quotes the millions who don't have internet access but does it mention the number who choose not to have an online life instead reverting to more traditional methods?
