CONCORD TO SHUT DOWN SEPT 6TH: EVERYONE REFUNDED!

Was watching a stream with a game dev and he had a few horror stories, one of them was about this:

Crazy if true, I've not seen this reported anywhere else. I do wonder if the studio will bounce back but it also wouldn't surprise me if they were closed down within a year.

No one is crying online, apart from the devs. No one cared for the game from either side, if you were trying to imply otherwise. It's funny seeing the DEI and let's call them for what they are, transphobes and racists claiming this is a victory when it clearly isn't one. There was not enough interest garnered for the game from day one, as the trailers and betas showed. It was clearly a game no one wanted to play.

Yes they are.

No interest in the game?

Well, definitely not after the devs called their potential customers "talentless freaks".

Goodbye Concord, and good riddance. Hopefully publishers use this as a warning on how to waste 8 years of dev time and $200m+.
Companies are becoming aware that IP pushing 'progressive' narratives over developing an engaging story and enjoyable gameplay will lead to financial ruin. The trouble this has been going on since 2016 and really ramped up in 2020 so there's still plenty of this stuff in the pipeline.

Given this 9th generation of consoles has very few exclusive games and hardly any new IP companies can afford to just write off whole projects like Sony did with Concord so you can expect to see more 'progressive' based games and movies over the next year/18 months.

Not surprised, there are so many of these games and the 'vibe' I read is that people are now tired of live service games (rather than 'getting tired' which has been the last few years). Unfortunately the game industry is several years behind just because of how long it takes to make a game (eight years in this case).

Honestly I am not sure where the AAA / console/PC game industry goes from here. It takes such a long time to make an AAA game, a game needs to make so much revenue or profit in the eyes of publishers or investors that why would they bother? AA games don't really exist any more and those that do don't make enough money to satisfy publishers/investors or whoever. BG3 and Elden Ring etc are loved and I am sure sell well but I doubt they make the money of peak Destiny / GTA:O / whatever the popular mobile games are. I'm not sure there is a way of making more money that peak live service games and I am not sure decision makers will accept making less money.

The problem is that everyone threats this as a business instead of an artistic endeavour - a real one, not some "modern" kind.

Bit weird to want to change your career just because of one failure

It comes across like these people have lived very sheltered lives and have never had to deal with criticism or failure before.

That said, interfering management holding up an out of touch check box of requirements must be soul crushing as an artist.

A perfect example of 'good' not being good enough if you are trying to break into a very congested market. Concord looks...fine....if it had come out before Overwatch and Apex it would have done well.

But it didn't. It arrived late, and none of it is as well executed as Overwatch and Apex, and has a bat**** insane price tag against F2P competition. Commercial suicide.

Yeah it's literally not what to when releasing a game into that space. It's like they took every wrong direction possible.

An example of uber success.
What do you see missing in this pic?..

No purple/blue hair, no dumb pronoun badges, no regrettable tattoos or questionable face piercings, but..

a bunch of devs/gamers that are focused on the job at hand and that have smashed it out of the park by going back to basics and have a genuine love for gaming.
It shows, doesn't it?

I think it's fair to point out that one guy on the right and his guns.

10/10 definition.

Is this supposed to be some sort of "gotcha"? They are a Japanese studio, you are far less likely to see that anyway.

TLOU part 2 remastered is one of the highest rated games of 2024 and features a diverse team, go figure.

So regrettable tattoos means dev/gamers aren't focused or don't have a genuine love for gaming? That makes no sense, there is no relation. At this point you have outed yourself as a troll.

I find it astonishing that you wrote this entire post out and then thought yeah, I should definitely send that.

I don't care if developers have blue or green or yellow hair, neither should you. It shouldn't matter to you if some developers care about their pronouns, if it doesn't impact you then why should you care.

Tattoos & piercings is an insane one. I saw a 50 year old bloke with a full sleeve of tattoos and an earring in Waitrose yesterday, I should have stopped to ask him why he's ruined game development.

This isn't about developers and whatever nonsense you've written above, this is about game studios having a vision for a game and executing that - but also just making a game that isn't about FOTM or live service or battle passes or trying to create 'fomo'. It's a fun game - but like many others in this thread - I'm going to assume that people didn't play Concord and aren't currently playing Astro Bot.

Back at you

Thanks for telling me how I should live my life, really, thanks ever so much.

Congratulations.

At last, you've finally got it, well done, have a cookie.
Some obviously focus on the game and the game only better than others though, without the need to inject all kinds of nonsense dontcha think?
I mean, it's kinda proven by now what works and what doesn't.

Oh, and this will really get those pearls being clutched..

How dare they use this sort of game promotion!
It's absolutely scandalous, what were they thinking!
Totally outrageous.

If these dweebs busting a nut for a racially, culturally and sexually homogeneous society ever saw the inside of a game studio, they'd lose their minds. I like my tats and would probably die my hair if I had any.

You should probably take up finance as a hobby if you don't like people expressing themselves. Been and done the grey suit life, boring as ****.

A very good friend of mine is a senior developer at Firewalk, he joined the Concord project about three years ago, and I was privy to a lot of the early builds and beta tests of the game.

As far as team-based shooters go, I play a lot of Apex and have dabbled with Fortnite but that's about it.

I thought the game was 'ok', and when he gave me a key for Concord.....aside from adding it to my Steam library, I didn't do much else with it.

I didn't notice the pronoun 'thing' when I played the game so it didn't make any difference to my perception of the game, I just thought it was nuts to charge $40 for a genre that could be played for free elsewhere.

However, with the game being unplugged now, my focus is that my mate is probably gonna lose his job........and that's my concern at the moment.
