We all know that the windows 8.1 update itself will be a free download, but there have been a few discussions on the best way to buy a new version, the consensus being (I believe) that it would be to start with a retail version of Windows 8.0.

One of the cheapest ways I have found to obtain one of these is from a fairly popular on-line supplier of office based products who is currently selling the upgrade version (from XP. Vista or 7) of Windows 8.0 Pro for just £46.19 which includes 'free' next day shipping via UPS.

This has to be a good deal, surely?

Does the upgrade version require the use of a legitimate 7 key?

I have RTM running on a PC and tablet both have received their 8.1 General Availability update rollup (KB 2883200 230MB) from Windows Update.

Gah, I think I'll just format back to 8.0 and then update to 8.1 through the store. There doesn't seem to be any way of getting rid of the Media Center update otherwise.
