'Contact lost' with Malaysia Airlines plane

Quick question. Why do they fly so low, the search planes?? Surely something like 5000ft would give as clear a view over a larger distance...??

So they can see smaller objects easier?

Something like a seat cushion at 5k feet might be too small to ID, at 300 or so it's close enough you can get a reasonable ID.

Given the sizes in question, potentially, easy. A recent flight to France at 25k and I could see most things, boats, other planes below us, etc

Sure you can see those things but without high resolution eyesight you would be able to make out debris.

Just reading last night that the latest spots were four bright orange objects over 2m in size... That sounds like it could be life rafts or slides if related to the crash. If that's the case that brings up a gruesome idea. If they are life rafts then they are unlikely to have enough water for 3 weeks at sea. Any other ideas what they may be if related to the plane, it had no orange livery AFAIK.

There is always potential for solar stills l but you'd also expect a raft to have an EPIRB and as such be noticed by now.

If they crashed into the sea at the speed that the satellites say they were travelling, there would be zero chance of anybody surviving, let alone somehow being in a position to deploy any form of formal exit procedures!

Fishing bouy's?

I'd have thought life rafts would be larger than 2m in diameter

Standard rafts (or at least ones I've been in) are around 3-4m, not far off the "more than 2 metres". No idea how big ones from aircraft are though. Conversely it seems massive for a buoy.

Not saying they are rafts, however they could be. The plane doesn't need to have been flying at the speed it was on radar when it landed. It's currently reasonable to assume someone may still have been in control of the aircraft when it landed (whether controlled after running out of fuel or aimed at the water for a suicide attempt, or other option) so it's not unreasonable to say there may have been a successful sea landing, with the plane afloat long enough for people to get out.

On the other hand most life rafts have EPIRBS as mentioned earlier and if deliberately flown all that way it would be reasonable to assume someone didn't then try to land it as safely as possible.

It could be a very sick game or the pilot that took it out that far was subdued and the copilot took control back.

However it has previously been discussed that a 'soft' landing is not possible in the ocean?

I thought I'd already heard it was orange fishing equipment that was seen?

Four orange items considered "the most promising leads" yet in the search for MH370 are in fact fishing equipment, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has confirmed.

It is possible, just look at the video posted a few pages back, the plane crashed and many were killed, however significant numbers survived even though there was a fight in the cockpit that caused the plane to veer left and the wingtip hit the water just as it was about to land.

Well there goes that idea. I'd only read iLyne latest update on the train on the way in, assume it's been updated in the last hour or so then?
