Contactless payments to increase to £100 from 15/10

£100 seems high to me. Going to be a right headache if you lose your card or phone and someone has been going round spending £100 everywhere until you realise.

Phone requires authentication, so there shouldn't be any more worry there other than the fact you've just lost your phone.

As for contactless cards, not to worry on CC's, it's not really your money to be lost. But DC's, yes, though I don't carry mine around with me any more, i don't have any frequent use for it.

Isn't contactless still a card issuer liability if you report your card stolen rather than a consumer liability?

So any worries about fraud aren't a direct cost as such, though obviously fraud absorbed by the issuer will indirectly end up as part of the 'cost' you pay for your card facility.

We need more security on them like fingerprint to allow them to be used.
This is my issue too. If I lose my card then someone could use it multiple times without my PIN, until I realise I've lost it. At least with my phone they have to unlock it first (fingerprint) before using it for payments.

All the more reason to leave the debit/credit cards at home. All my payments are done via Google/Samsung Pay. No limits in most places, no faff, more secure.... Physical payment cards are ancient technology that should be phased out like CDs have been.

Some argue that what if your phone breaks or gets stolen, well the same applies to cards too. Mobile contactless uses a digital card number that's not the same as your physical card number, so an extra level of security to boot because you can just de-activate it then re-activate on a new phone with a new digital card number later. NO need to have your physical car reported lost/stolen and await a new card.

Google pay on my phone doesn't need any authentication, works without unlocking. I know because I was hunting for a settings last week to force it to be unlocked to be used and I couldn't find anything

It works the same as a contactless card. Under a certain amount you don't need to unlock. Over a certain amount (or certain number of small amounts) - you do.

Good, having to use anything but contactless is just annoying these days. I've just got back from a European road trip and didn't take any cash or my wallet with me. Apple Pay is accepted everywhere I would have needed it, petrol stations, restaurants and supermarkets. Biggest inconvenience was the backwards service stations that require a 50 cent coin to use the toilets.

Really? That seems rather odd. Certainly not the case with Apple pay, they could at least give you the option with Google pay.

Yeah, what i liked most about Spain was that no matter the value you always used contactless, then dependant on the value you then had to use a pin code.

So much better than here where you go to tap it through habit, then it gives an error so you have to wait for it to sort itself out before inserting the card and entering a pin.

I've only just started using Apple Pay on my phone and I'm annoyed for leaving it so long. So much more secure than my bank card and a lot less likely to lose.

I think I only take my card out of my wallet for pay at pump these days, everything else is Google pay.

To those who only pay with contactless or on mobile, if the internet or contactless system goes down, they won’t work!

As a contractor drilled through the cable down where my work is and all shops’ internet went down. Some had to close. It was a nightmare as not only for payments, we had to hand write reduction labels, unable to activate gift cards, issue phone credit vouchers etc.

I find it absurd it's taken so long. £100 used to be a lot of money some times ago. Now it's about barely anything unfortunately. Since contactless payments are backed by the banks in terms of insurance for fraud there is little to no risk for the user.

Cash should have been killed off a long time ago IMO.

That's the same with everything other than cash and even cash since the ATMs won't work, and the banks wouldn't be able to use their computers so would either have to manually account for counter withdrawals or deny you money. Only keeping it under the mattress will fix that.

Also, how often do some of you lose your wallet/cards? Some of the posts in here make it sound like a weekly occurrence!

Did anyone see in the news that Starbucks has over $1bn in gift cards on its balance sheet? That is more liquidity than 85% of US banks!

It's only for up to the max amount, if you try to tap and pay without unlocking the phone then it will bong out as you have to unlock the phone to pay for more than £45 (soon to be £100).

With Samsung Pay you cannot make any payments until your fingerprint or PIN is entered on the lockscreen when you swipe up to load Samsung Pay even when the screen is off.
