Contactless payments to increase to £100 from 15/10

I’ve been in places before where I’ve had no service on my iPhone and Apple Pay has gone through fine.
Likely merchant floor limits, terminal rules or the terminal had a connection.

Of course it works if the device doesn't have an internet connection, all the work is being done by the terminal. That's why it works on Apple Watches that don't have a cellular connection.

Indeed, I'm surprised people didnt know this

Until everywhere allows NFC/contactless payments, fuel pumps being the one of the biggies over here, there will still a need for a physical card and there will be for some time.

Petrol is just as old fashioned as cash and will go the same way.

Gonna be some decisions to make when its realised all the existing petrol stations are woefully small for extremely slow and therefore space hungry electric recharging.

Perhaps multi-storey recharging and parking will be the future.

Some people on a tight budget may get themselves into trouble as they forget how much they are spending.

And this is my problem, how? Why should the majority have to suffer just because a minority of idiots can't manage their money?

Also in shops, some people don’t understand when their payments have declined- a double beep, instead of a single long beep. Some tap card on machine, leave immediately before the payment has declined.

Again, why should the majority be shackled with a lower limit due to a minority being clueless idiots?

I have not used a physical card for fuel for years...

Switched to Apple Pay years ago and haven’t looked back. Petrol stations take contactless Apple Pay here too.

great for ordering pints down the pub too. So quick, and no faffing about with receipts and change etc. Can’t wait for money to finally be phased out completely.

Glad to see it increase by a large amount as £45 was just too low and the limits below that originally was an absolute joke for a lot of transactions, £100 is just right.

I only pay with Apple Pay as I never carry a wallet and haven't for the last few years. When card readers know its an Apple Pay traction then there is no limits but a lot of places just class it as a regular contactless payment so the hard limit applies and that was just frustrating as I would have to make 2 separate payments if it was over £45. At least with a £100 hard limit that covers 99% of my payments which suits me fine.

The only place I've been to that imposes the contactless limit on Apple Pay is Tesco. Everywhere else, there's no limit. That's fine by me, Apple Pay is far more secure than a contactless card anyway.

Its because Tesco don't use/haven't been accredited to use high value contactless. Probably why they have Tesco pay to compensate for it or maybe that's why they haven't been accredited so people use Tesco Pay.

Slightly off topic but Tesco are in an interesting place with their POS systems, writing it all in house kicking out NCR. Like the industry has gone full circle :)

“I haven’t used a card for x y z in years” - often said by people in cities or nearer the capitol, where services and systems are typically further ahead than more rural towns etc..

And those complaining of small businesses not accepting card - chances are those small indies will disappear when online payments (therefore auditable and taxable) are the only acceptable measure. It’s no bother to us employed/contracted and monthly paid workers, but like it or not, a lot of small business owners continue to rely on cash in hand. Even slipping a third of their sales in as cash is what helps them to justify keeping the business open.

I’ve been watching a lot of WW2 documentaries a recently, and when questioned over why he wanted to secure the oil fields instead of moving quickly to Moscow, Hitler responded with “my Generals know nothing about the economics of war”. Not to compare anyone here to a nazi general ( :D), but I think the nuances of economics is lost on a vastly tech orientated Internet forum.

If you ever wonder why the banks are happy to accept the increase in fraud risk, it’s because they have found a way where they can monetise despite the risk.

I'm not sure the US Capitol has great public transport if I am honest.

I'm not sure where you live but even our local fruit and veg stool has entered the 21st century and accepts contactless. Infact a lot of stores have signs up saying "no cash" due to COVID etc.

If they need to evade tax to survive then their business isn't viable and they should find something else to do.
