Control Resonant

Got to the first boss, and it's really hard. I'm not really a fan of souls-like combat, so I might bounce off this if I can't beat it.

PS5 here but advice still applies obviously. Stick with it mate, don't go all gung ho
Attack dodge attack dodge and use levitate whilst up close, also once it's in the sky use levitate to knock it down quickly.
Once you get the knack of it the boss doesn't last long.

Well I'm confused. I downloaded the game via Steam earlier today before it was officially launched, all 100GB of it. Just went to play it and it's downloading all the data again; what's that about? It's at times like this I'm glad I download from Steam at 1,000 Mbps.

Exactly the same happened to me, I pre-loaded last night and it had definitely finished downloading, then today it just started downloading from scratch. I don't often pre-load games but I'm sure this happened last time I tried.

Sadly I don't have a 1000 Mbps connection and its a 3 hour download for me, though thankfully I didn't have time to play it this evening anyway, so it will at least be ready for me tomorrow.

The hotfix they did just before launch broke the preloads, they apologised on twitter

I'm enjoying the game and put a few hours in but after playing onimusha through I think I need a bit of a break from this genre.

I'm going to wait for Gears to come out in Oct, play that, then return to this.

I'm only a few hours in and already I'm reminded of everything I loved and also hated about the first game. The atmosphere is great, the weirdness is as you'd expect, and the plot beats are working most of the time but it's also a bit ... clunky. There's a very hard boss fight before the actual intros come on screen which feels completely out of place in tone and difficulty and then a further run around mission where you're against the clock but can't see the clock and it just feels like faffing about while the story works out what to do next.

I don't know, I'll keep going but I don't care for games that intentionally add friction and I'm also aware that might be a 'me' problem.

It looks good and the number of options - including difficulty, which was a godsend for me who doesn't have the patience of the 20 year old me - is Remedy through and through. In summary, here for the story but I hope the experience picks up a bit once we get going.

e: 4 hours later - is this game intentionally trying to annoy the player? It seems wide but with little depth, icons everywhere like it wants to be open world but also can't be arsed, and unless I am a complete buffoon* they've taken the Make Your Own Adventure route but also one where you can't actually do that because certain parts seem to be gated (I think? It's very hard to tell).

* I am, thank you.

I'm still going through Onimusha too, so this one will probably be on the back burner until next year now - considering there's a few other titles I'll want to play first (OOT etc)

And if one more NPC (including main characters!) says "I don't really know the science but ..." I will lose my waning interest completely. I know it's a wink to camera moment - hey, we're Remedy, and we know that this isn't explainable, that's cosmic horror folks, arf arf! - but it's getting a little tiring now.

Eurogamer's 3 out of 5 was bang on and I should have listened to that review.

I got as far as beating the first boss last night. The was quite a surprising step up in challenge, which for me felt like medium difficulty, mainly because you could tank a lot of hits without dying. If it was one/two shotting then yeah, it would been much more tricky. Felt like they had it in mind as a bit of a tutorial as to the benefits of the hover mechanic.

I've seen a number of reviews saying it really gets going later in the game when you have a broader range of abilities.

Onimusha was fantastic. It felt like a Sekiro successor (albeit significantly less difficult) and was a joy to play.

Played the first hour so, enjoying it so far. Been a while since I played the first, did the board have such a 'dune like' voice in the first, can't remember if so, but it sounds brilliant!

Nah not this level of bass. Room go brrr.

Idk what's up with the lighting in some areas. The character faces are nowhere near the fidelity of the first game. Pope is a hot mess. I'm on max everything, hoping there's a fix coming.

Lighting issues you're seeing might be the HDR which is a little borked I think, bright colours are too bright and stuff. Definitely worth grabbing RenoDX HDR for this.

I can't imagine the faces will get updated. I think they've just not prioritized face detail in this for performance reasons, because of how much more detail and stuff is in the world itself. I did notice Emily stood out as especially 'droid like' tho.

Haven't used RenoDX, is there a perf hit?

No performance hit i don't think. Maybe it's not the same as your issue with the lighting, but it better balances bright tones:

Other than that it changes very little really and things will mostly look the same. The mod is not fully done yet it seems, and it can cause a crash if you toggle the Ray Reconstruction game setting with it enabled, but it can be found in the RenoDX discord, 'mods' section. When it's done and stable though it should appear here.

How are you guys getting on with KB + M? I wondered if melee was basically built for a controller which I have but do not care for.

Also this:

Well this has not gone well.

GoG launcher required a .net update and now my display is glitching even on the desktop.

I'm not totally sure how to fix this which is really annoying, tried a driver reinstall/.net uninstall etc..

Any suggestions? I'm on a 5090fe if it matters but this started very specifically exactly when I opened control.

Was the HDMI cable dying? Wild.. the timing was very odd.

I'm finding it a little awkward. Might have to switch to a controller. A few keybindings are locked off which is annoying if you're a left-hander like me.
