Core 9000 series

I will be looking at AMD EPYC when next project crops up, the hassle we are going through patching Intel servers world wide for security flaws is a right PITA, having to have local staff standby while working remotely etc, having spares on site in case something fails, finding suitable downtime also means people working out of hours both in the UK and abroad, the software patching isn't too bad its the BIOS updates if they been made available, some kit is pretty old :(

Really it's hard not to at least consider it when you think that you can have a dual 7601 server for like 17k or less when the closest Intel Xeon platinum adds nearly 10k to that price for not much in the way of performance. Right now there is nothing in the Intel lineup that is anywhere near as compelling.

LOL is less not more. For the price of the 9700 you get both 2700X and good mobo

Just for clarity, I9 9900k = 483 (what i paid for it) minus 170 I sold my old processor for. so that's 313. AMD 2700x = 289 plus 100 for mobo and 80 for a new cooler so total 469 and that's even factoring in the time to build and reinstall.

For that math to work you need to minus the 170+mobo sale off of 469. So you are already down to £299 for the Ryzen minus what you can make from your old mobo.

Are you reusing a z370 board for your build? I think the main cost issue really is where you're comparing just the chips it's a 300 pound difference approximately in the UK, obviously if you import it, there's possibly better deals to be had. But also the cost for upgrading from pre-z370 kit. In that case both sides need the CPU and mobo combo. And comparing that, no matter which way I swing it if I buy in the UK, then intel is 300 more than AMD.

Not disagreeing but all I need in the processor.. everything else will already work with it. If I was going from scratch I would be AMD all the way.

Staggering to think it is significantly cheaper for us consumers to import. Considering UK sellers will receive a further discount on shipping and such compared to us. It really is just gouging and *potentially price fixing to the extreme.

Depends if he can re-use existing (likely on Intel) or would need to buy new (a possibility on AMD). Depends on board choice, chip type, timings, etc.

True, I have to admit I feel like more of a novice when it comes to AMD, but I thought the 2nd lot of ryzens on the x470 boards didn't have much of a problem with RAM anymore? At least I hope so, because I ordered my ram over a month ago without thinking I might even be considering changing over to AMD at the time lol.

Just to clarify, I can drop in the 9900k into my present setup without changing anything else apart from a BIOS update and some paste. It's the only reason I didn't go AMD.

I believe x470 is generally much better. But the cheaper boards and B450 can still be sensitive. Someone made a timing calculator for Ryzen. So it is not always a simple case of plug-n-play.

I think it should be fairly obvious now effective competition doesnt mean prices will come down, this has been evident for the past few years with dram, flash nand, and smartphones. This is why I also said if AMD came out with a magic GPU nvidia prices would budge slightly but not much more.
That's because too many pay anything for some brand, or small performance difference.
Getting every maker to actually compete in price, buyers would need to stop their brand blindness, or more precisely take their head out of some brand's butthole.

And DRAM-price is high because there's been cartel in there for couple years.

And what if it's because the retailers know their allocation is 50 cpus total.

You can't buy it if it's not available so if you have prior knowledge that supply is going to be complete garbage the correct decision is to milk the few whales who will buy no matter what.

"allocation"? They could just buy a load from rainforest and oldegg themselves and STILL make a HUGE profit...
