Corsair Carbide Air 540 Builds

Yes mate.

jeckulz, I hope you still follow this thread. Where did you get that cover? I'm looking to install a plate like that, and mount 2 fans on it to suck cool air up into the case.

Not only is the bottom ugly to look at, it's a waste of valuable space!

Could someone make me a plastic plate like that if jeckulz doesn't reply?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, I was recently thinking of changing my case as part of a random upgrade itch, but after browsing what's on offer I just couldn't bring myself to part with my Air540.

Awesome case.

Not sure if you're taking the ****.
I will assume you aren't.
There are two points to my reply
1-I'm a little flattered - Because I made it.
Dremel off the drive rails off the bottom, cut some 1mm aluminium to size,
Drill some holes for the black hexscrews, wrap in your choice of vinyl, stick some adhesive foam on a roll to the case floor (bit of sound dampening), add bolts to hold plate in place.
2-Yes you can put fans on the bottom, but please don't do it if you're not going to make the filter too - It's pretty easy to be fair.
Unfiltered intakes +Windowed case =

Do it properly ;)

Wasn't taking the pee, I'm surprised you thought I was!

I could make it no problem, but it's sourcing the right materials that is the pain. I though maybe you had bought a piece of plate from somewhere that was the right size? And the vinyl, I'm not sure what type of vinyl you mean.

I'll strip it down and have a bash. I may use some black PVC instead of aluminium. And yea, I'll certainly be using a pair of black tights in the mod. :D

Maybe it all just seemed a little obvious to me. (maybe because I made it LOL)

As for materials - eBay is your friend. You can order raw materials for literally any project like this.
Alu, acrylic, mesh, stick on magnets, adhesive foam, bolts, nuts, vinyl...
Essentially, you can get it all on the bay

And as for vinyl, 3m Di-noc is what I used, it's widely regarded as the best/easiest to use, and I have to agree - very easy to install.

If you need to see how to use it, then youtube is your other friend ;)

Acrylic is not really noob-modder friendly.
It cracks fairly easily if you're heavy handed while cutting/drilling.
Alu is way more forgiving, and yet still soft enough to only need a dremel to cut it.
You just need to have a medium file and some 800g wet&dry sand paper on hand to take care of the burred/rough edges.

I can't think why you're using vinyl, I know it'll be obvious but... are you using it to save painting the bare metal? Why not use some PVC flat plate instead? PVC would be easier to cut and have a better finish, no?

Not criticising by the way, just curious about your choices.

Because vinyl is faster, less prep and you get a good choice of textures, designs and colours (White carbon fiber anyone??)
If you have an area that you can utilise to get a good spray finish, then be my guest. Realistically, I wanted it done in a day, so vinyl is the only way to go.
Painting alone would have taken me 2 days - multiple coats, good drying time, keeping the paint at a good curing temperature...
Vinyl you get none of that and all you need is some soapy water and a hairdryer.

I'm thinking about vinyl to wrap my exterior parts too.

Plus, if you get sick of the colour/design - you just peel it off and start again.
I love vinyl as a result of this experience.
I even did my HDDs in a carbon effect

That look's great mate well done. I think I might even have a bash at this soon. I was waiting for the light boxes to come back in stock in January when the shop re opens, but I think yours looks better.

Are they just 5.5 > 3.5 brackets to put the hdd's in the bay in the back? I have a dvd writer in mine that I use, but I think I might try out putting the hdd's in there and just buy an external for when I need it.

Also the Vinyl on the drives themselves look great as well. So many idea to steal, I mean to use for inspiration.

Because vinyl is faster...

Cheers for the info. I've dug up a supplier on the bay for aluminium sheet cut to size (probably the same company you use), so once I get the drive rails removed I'll measure up and get cracking. You went for 1mm thick plate, right?

Where did you source the vinyl exactly? I know you can't link to competitiors, but even a clue as in what to Google?

To be honest, I didn't even think about the bay for custom cut plate and it's not too expensive either. I think I'll end up getting a few brackets and plates placed strategically here and there!

Vinyl is available on the bay.
Terms for searching the bay like 'vinyl wrap' and 'vinyl sheet' return good results.

Yeah 1mm-1.5mm is fine. Anything works really, just bear in mind you gotta cut it too.

Good luck :D

Lovely case! (Though I have already snapped a bit of the SSD bay off!)

Upgrading after 5 or 6 years to a 4690K, Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H board, Noctua NH-D15 cooler (quiet and big!), 32GB RAM (low profile to fit the cooler, lots of it to do in-memory calculations on stupidly large GIS datasets), Asus 970 GTX (no fan a lot of the time), RM1000 PSU (massive overkill, but no fan at low / this load), 750GB SSD (silent and ridiculously fast), 2 x WD Green 2TB drives (quiet and efficient), new Deathadder (my old one was dying), old Tarantula (still going strong but I'll probably upgrade it soon).

Without the case fans it is effectively silent on the desktop, my girlfriend didn't believe it was switched on. I actually bought three Noctua NF-A14 FLX's to replace the supplied case fans but they were a lot noisier than expected, particularly in the front positions (though I tested them out of the case too and they weren't as quiet as I'd have thought) - I ended up with one AF14 in the back using the ultra low-noise adapter and the two Corsair fans kept in the front running through low-noise adapters. My old PC was quiet (Noctua fans in a Silverstone TJ09, sexy beast) but this definitely shaves some noise off. And it fits under my desk!

Finally finished..

Great case, love the back compartment, bit plastic-y and brittle sometimes. Would buy again.

:)

Well I got it safe and sound. Omg I am so happy with this case. Puts my haf 912 to shame. Will post pictures when I've uploaded them to photo bucket. Nzxt hue makes this look amazing.... almost like lab equipment all in white with white lights :D

Still researching this!

I've been looking at acrylic sheets on the bay. Is that something you've considered? I'm really just asking in case you have dismissed it for any reason that I'm not thinking of. I see it as an advantage because it won't need any other work other than cut and drilled.

Also, have you sourced any of those little cube fixings like Parvum use? I could buy theirs, but £1 per cube seems a bit steep.

Hi,

Does the AF140 fit to the rear without any modification? I read they don't fit properly

Also whats best for the front -

3 x SP120
3 x AF120
2 x SP140
2 x AF140?

I keep reading conflicting information on whether or not you need SP fans because of the mesh

Thanks

Yes, AF140 should fit the rear of the case with no problem. Some good photos here

Most of our set up in the lab are using 3 x AF120 and they seem to be doing an amazing job cooling them. Though we haven't compared results with SPs due to we've only used SPs for rad cooling. I wouldn't worry about the mesh in the front, they are not that dense as you probably think. Air will easily pass through them with ease.
