I've nothing to set a profile with, the ASUS utility does not recognise the CPU fan.

Ok that's up and running.

There's an update firmware option but it needs a file and I don't have one.

With the older cooler like H80 and H100, you will need the commander to flash the FW. Otherwise, you won't be able to.

Try re-setting the FW

To reset the firmware, use the following procedure:
1. While the computer is running, hold down the profile button for approximately five seconds
2. Wait one minute, while the unit continues to run
3. Shut down your computer
4. Press and hold the profile button for five seconds while turning on the power to your computer.

And when you say the cooler stops, is it just the cooler or system shuts off?
