I read somewhere that the algorithm for ranking is secret but what is known about it? Like I heard somewhere that you had to win loads of games in a row and would not rank up if you lose, but playing solo, I am on the bad team 50% of the time and have therefore lost a lot of games but I’m still steadily ranking up although obviously it gets slower the higher you go. Like I lost a game a few games ago but then won two in a row and ranked up. Not sure how it works really but enjoying the games so far anyway. Great game when you get a decent team.
Actually had fairly evenly matched teams last night, we had two good player they had one good player and one outstanding player where we drew 15-15 in the end. Disappointed not to win but can’t complain, their top player was ridiculously good.
Me too! Matchmaking, even on Prime is a bit hit and miss. It does feel like Prime is better than before I was on Prime though. Except when I get called a smurf which I would have thought should not be possible on Prime, is it?
Well my 2nd account/smurf is primed, I just use the other halfs phone for the authentication. So yeah it is possible, I do still think it works to deter cheaters though as having to grind to the lvl cap for prime is probably more effort than cheaters are will to put in.

There is a great big guide on ranking, like 30 pages long I swear. I'll get the link and post it up and ask it goto the OP since thats why this thread exists now.
UPDATE 7 - 2 June 2016
The following sections contained massive inaccuracies and/or false information, therefore they have been corrected to prevent spreading misinformation:
Effect of Surrender on Elo Points
Effect of Kick on Elo Points
Your rank will be updated once the game is finished, you will retain all the ROUND STATS (W/L) however your personal stats (including MVP) for the rounds that you didn't participate in (after being kicked) would be nullified. It would be basically the same as AFKing all the extra rounds without dying.
So overall, the effect of being kicked out of a game would ALWAYS be negative. In other words, being kicked out of the game has increases the amount of rank points LOSS and decreases the amount of rank point GAINS.
Your rank will be updated based on the Round Results (at the time of surrender) and your personal stats such as MVPs. Basically, if you Surrender a match while you have more round wins than the enemy, you will GAIN rank points and vice versa. So it's usually a good idea to surrender a match once you're ahead of the enemy so you wouldn't risk losing it instead.

When competitive matchmaking as we know it now was introduced in CS:GO in late 2012 we switched all non-competitive game modes to use simple ping-based matchmaking. For Competitive, we built a CS:GO-specific competitive ranking system that is significantly different and more complex than Elo.
The CS:GO competitive ranking system started with ideas based on Glicko-2 rating model and improved over time to better fit the CS:GO player base. All computations are performed on our matchmaking backend and multiple matchmaking parameters describing scientific set of rating variables of a player are represented to players as a their Skill Group. You should be able to find papers on rating systems involving rating volatility and rating deviations online to get a better idea about why our complex competitive matchmaking parameters cannot be represented as a single numeric value.
There are no fixed rules on ranking up, it varies on the climate If 5000 get banned, you get gaps and you might go up easier. Also any ban wipes that persons wins. I presume it reverses the opponents lost points also (elo etc)
So a rank up gets easy then, it can be very hard also. Ive got 13 wins in a row, desperately trying to go DMG to eagle cos I knew that was my last chance but never got there.
By far the largest factor ignored too much is round wins, not did you win the map but the margin by which you won. Pro games this might not matter but MM it definetly does. You keep winning 16-0 it should rank up much faster then a near draw 16-14 and way too often people get silly when they easily winning. Dont do that, you need the big wins especially if next you lose horrible or get dragged into a game with a bot of one kind or another
Also I always screencap the scoreboard ranks at game end. If I nova wins in a game of DMG and eagles and gets say 13 kills, not exactly great score but the game I think rates that really quite highly. If you top frag vs your same rank, I reckon that counts for less. [I dont believe the game rates ECO kills any differently, not sure but I doubt it]
So not all game wins are equal, you can add up ranks both sides and Valve MM does this and stops the lobby if rank difference on teams is above 10 difference. Thats still very wide maybe, DMG can still go vs Global sometimes and they are miles apart usually.
Not all ranks are the same gauge, all of Nova is very flat so this where you should be popping up and down all the time in rank, get above DMG and it becomes much slower I think
I hate cheaters . Happily stomping/getting carried them then they win 8 in a row to bring it to a draw. Ended up gold nova 3.
Such blatant cheats as well but there's no real way to report them after the match has ended . Thought it was suspect but wanted to confirm in replay before I reported didn't know you couldn't report afterwards seems a bit silly.

It takes 12! I haven't seen as many suspicious ones in Prime but there have a few alright. I didn't want to report anyone if I wasn't sure but might have to start that so.
In one game we got put up against a pro player and presumably some of his FPL friends, TuGuX from Space Soldiers, needless to say we got absolutely wrecked haha!
Couple of recent plays, I love pistol rounds, specifically on mirage
Can't get out of GN3 at the moment - playing well but then every time I get 3 or 4 wins on the bounce with a decent team, I get 2 idiot teams and loose them despite top frag/MVP's etc. Seemed destined to be stuck there!
