Couple of Corolla T-Sport questions!

Ah OK. :p

I am assuming this is the clutch release bearing as the noise depends on engine speed rather than gear speed, and as it is a common thing.

Yeah whooshing noise on lift off of accelerator. Noticeable at idle too. Most likely the input shaft bearing in the gearbox. Some say it's normal but I don't think it is.

How much would I be looking at to replace the input shaft bearing?

The only gearbox work I've had done before was a replacement synchromesh ring in the Polo gearbox which was £170 because it was a really easy job.

If "some say its normal" does that mean "it is safe to ignore" or if I ignore it, could it cause lasting damage elsewhere?

Engine oil topped up, air filter and cabin filter changed. :) Now I just need to change the oil and oil filter at some point, and then see about these clutch/gearbox things.

e; consensus around the interwebs is that it is the clutch release bearing, lots of people with the exact symptoms in Corollas, Celicas, Civics etc, who changed the release bearing & clutch, and the noise went.

Hi Acme,

You did link earlier to my three for my wife's Celica T-Sport. It still actually makes the sounds I describe on my old thread, and they have not got any worse. I'm not sure if they're the same ones you describe, but the clutch itself is fine, and the car has done about 13,000 miles since my old post. It still only does it when the oil is warm. We have had the oil changed on the box and it didn't

We did take it over to a garage that quoted £450 for a rebuild on the box plus replacement parts, but their assessment was it wasn't an issue at the time.

Doesn't really help I'm afraid!

Pics! :)

Busy day today, new tyres, tracking and alignment, a good wash, new numberplates, new wipers, new filters, I also removed the "Toyota" badge from the back because the red enamel was wearing off. I think it looks better without it! :)

Have driven a good 120 miles since sorting out the tyres and tracking, it feels so much better!

One of the headlights needs restoring. A job for another day. And I can't decide if I want to leave the Corolla and T-Sport badges on there, or take off the Corolla badge and leave just the T-Sport badge.

Take the Corrola badge off, it will make the back look really clean, looks very cluttered with corrola and ts badge next to it, I would be tempted to relocate the TS to the bottom of boot lid or get rid altogether.

I have taken the Corolla badge off since those pictures and just kept the T-Sport badge front & back (as well as the Toyota emblems of course) - Just need to get a wire brush on the brake calipers/hubs now to get rid of the surface rust (you can see it through the wheels) and she's golden. :)

Plans for in a few months/a years time include making a custom induction kit, coilovers, and bigger/wider wheels with better tyres on. Potentially Stage 2 cams and some exhaust changes. For now though, I'm happy with it how it is! :D

Economy has also improved greatly since fitting the new tyres and changing filters and such. I was averaging 27.5 before, and now I'm sitting at 32! :)

What are peoples feelings on going red with the brake callipers if they weren't originally red? I like how it looks on this blue one. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pezza4u//corolla_tsport/corolla_04.jpg :p

Paint them red or can't hurt. Plus gives you an extra 10bhp.
Also I wouldn't bother with Stage 2 cams as you won't feel lift kick in yo. It smooths the power band out and gives you more mid range. Does nothing to the top end. Spend the money on a full exhaust system.

Nice looking car, I really miss mine - upgraded to a focus st after 6 years of ownership and 70,000 miles.

Over that time the only problem was a wheel bearing and thermostat, both fixed myself very cheaply - watch out for the slider pins on the brake calipers, I was forever un seizing them

I found that rainsport tyres ran the best, after trying several other brands.

Also had a few mods - k&n typhoon induction kit, longlife backbox, whiteline rear anti roll bar and a short shifter.

I also changed the head unit and used a scan gauge mounted in the little cubby hole by the drivers door for mpg and various other sensor readings

Looks in good nick - Well done for not listening to the naysyers. You know if it's any good once you see it in the flesh and have a good test drive.

Re the clutch, if its the original its worth replacing now, Makes a massive difference to the enjoyment having a lighter pedal, solid bite and peace of mind. Ride an old clutch for too long and you could knacker the flywheel.I put a new (Exedy) clutch on my celica, made it much nicer to drive.

And re the brake calipers/bell bit on discs - I got mine painted in hammerite smooth black. Still looks like new after 2 years.

EDIT - Red will look naff IMO. Only show off your brakes if you have a BBK.

And for the suspension, my mate and I only used springs (he has a Corrola like yours). We both agreed it transformed the handling. Minimal roll and much more planted. I went for Apex, he got Eibachs. Ride was still good and comfortable, but much better handling.

Personally don't think red looks too bad in that picture - certainly seen far worse cars with red calipers (like the focus outside my window at the minute with hand painted red calipers and rear drums)
