Couple of Corolla T-Sport questions!

My old boy got one of these near enough new (was the demonstrator @ toyota Swindon) back on a 51 plate. Champagne like Colour

Was quite a good laugh to drive and sounded great! The build quality and standard spec was all really good too. If it wasn't for having littluns I would be tempted by a SC one :)

I gave him no end of stick when he bought a dog and then traded it in for a CR-V :P

We have an Auris SR as our family car, basically the corolla's diet coke'd down grand child ....toyota build quality as standard though and goes ok for a 1.6 vvti-l (MR-S engine)

I'd still much rather have an EP3. They're bulletproof.
having had a civic ep3 premium i got fed up of everything rattling especially the windows and went back to a toyota celica the power is the same, maybe the ep3 was a bit more prominent when hitting vtec but over all i preferred the toyota.
but each to there own.

Would a hum/whirring sound which is affected by wheel speed (not engine speed, gear speed etc) and isn't affected by depressing the clutch, or putting it in neutral, be tire noise? Wheel bearing noise?

I only really started noticing it after having my new tyres fitted... Might be because they are bedding in? Don't really want to have to replace wheel bearing(s) too! :p

It is most noticable at 40 - 50MPH or so.

By a place that knows what they're doing? Have you got a tracking printout?

Jack it up one corner at a time and spin each wheel to listen/feel for noises or resistance. Grab it at 12 and 6 and give it a good tug and pull. Do the same again at 3 and 9. If all 4 wheels spin smoothly and don't have any play then the bearings are probably fine. Check all the tyres have the direction arrows or "outside" marks in the right place/direction.

Tyres shouldn't drone, "bedding in" or otherwise - chances are someone messed something up when they fitted them

Tracking was done by a place that knows what theyre doing with lasers and fancy things  No printout though.

The wheels were balanced properly as well as far as I'm aware, with a proper wheel balancing machine that tells you where to put the weights.

The machines with lasers and computers are only as good as the person using it. I'd always expect a printout from a 4 wheel alignment.

As I say, could be a bearing and the change of alignment has just emphasised it but that's easy to check. The timing would suggest someone's cocked up the alignment or balancing though - probably the former as you'd normally feel unbalanced wheels as vibration

The car used to judder over about 80MPH on my private airstrip before I had the tyres and tracking done, but now it is silky smooth all the way up to 120MPH on my private airstrip, so I don't think its that really. :p

Its not a vibration or juddering, just a noise. I've watched "wheel bearing noise" videos online and those noises are totally different.

Couldn't be the flywheel could it? Do they whine?

May well be alignment though. Have you checked he pressures too? They could just be noisy tyres but having them all pointing in the same direction helps

Flywheel wouldn't make a noise in conjunction with road speed - it's attached to the engine!

Haha I knew that. Not sure why I put that suggestion forward, its like I forgot what I already said. :p

Pressures are all fine, 2.2 bar in each tyre, which is the correct pressure.

I'd be inclined to go back to the tyre place and tell them that since tyres and alignment you've got this noise and ask if they'd mind double checking. The fact you didn't get a printout seems iffy to me - I've never not had one so it might be that they couldn't get something in spec and are trying to hide it

I've had my tracking done at this place a few times and never had a printout, I asked before they started and they said they don't do them. I'm pretty sure it is fine. The tyre fitting place is iffy though, so wheel balancing being out is possible, though I'm not sure how they would manage it as they have machines which literally tell them exactly where to put the weights! :p

Tracking and alignment gets done here: http://www.setyres.com/
Tyre fitting and balancing gets done by a part worn place on the local industrial estate, simply because they are friendly and just down the road, and seem to do a proper job with the proper tools. (to clarify, the tyres I got them to fit were the new ones which I provided)

Could wheel balancing make this strange oscilating humming noise though? I thought it would just cause vibration?

Having not heard it I can't really say too much but a small imbalance could make a noise yes. As I said before the machines are only as good as the people using them - just because it tells them where to put it, doesn't mean that's exactly where they did!

Did you have tracking or alignment done? If it's just tracking then do yourself a favour and find somewhere that offers a proper 4 wheel alignment with a hunter or similar machine. Tracking is only one part of the geometry so you really need a proper alignment to make sure everything is rolling smoothly. Ask if they'd mind checking the wheel balance while they're at it. Anywhere doing proper 4 wheel alignment will give you a printout of the specs before and after - some even give you a file on a USB stick. At least that will give you the assurance that everything is within spec
