COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

They have been making major mistakes due to staffing and other issues recently, my family member currently going through cancer related treatment and diagnosis has been though an absolute nightmare of it.

Its really sad. I don't want to blame them because honestly I can't I wish I had a proper place to direct my anger regarding that. This is kinda off topic though sorry(although she did contract covid when she went into and had emergency biopsy/operation). One of the nurses had it and yeah well.
I think a lot of staff left after nearly working themselves to death in 2020/21. Some of them did work themselves to death, whilst being told by some people upset that their pub was shut that it was just a cold.
It seems the clapping wasn't enough to keep them.

I'm sorry for your family member and hope that they make a good recovery. Allot of the issues around the NHS at the moment tends to come from understaffing through both vacant posts that no one wants to take, or through covid absence from staff. It's only going to get worse. If you've got one person doing the job of two or three then it increases the likelihood that mistakes can occur, not that it's acceptable. There is the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) that you can voice your displeasure to and they will thoroughly investigate, its a worthwhile and constructive path on both sides of the coin.

Seems it did come from the market after all...

I'm not convinced - as mentioned in the article there were 2 variants present in the area fairly early on (though there is the possibilities like 2 different animal->human spill over events) which generally would mean it was circulating somewhere at least a month before that otherwise. Along with a lot of missing information and/or proof otherwise when it comes to the virus existing in the animals present at the market.

One of the researchers involved seems to have set out with an agenda of debunking the lab leak theory, whether it is credible or not, as well.

As an aside to that what I find interesting is that one of those 2 variants was way worse than the other and shaped a lot of the early perceptions of COVID but seems to have lost out to the other variant in dominance disappearing entirely somewhere around late 2020. IIRC it peaked at something like 13 or 17% of UK cases in the first few weeks of the outbreak here before becoming virtual extinct.

It must be a miserable feeling working in the NHS right now, The public constantly upset at you and then you having to deal with lack of resources in one way or another. Then all the mistakes... I don't even want to get into that but its depressing.

Thank you for your wishes. Yeah I completely agree with you, we had to take quite a serious tone when discussing this whole situation with PALS as there was numerous issues, one being related to no one being available to assist in changing her stoma bag which was fitted after she was wheeled into emergency and they found the obstruction. This was quite frustrating considering the severity of the situation, !!!!It actually burst more than once because no one changed it..WHILE IN HOSPITAL!!!.

We had to push them to ensure she got properly treated and get the proper assistance. Due to the strain on the NHS the biopsy has taken FAR FAR longer than would otherwise and with cancer weeks and months = time off your life and potential terminal outcomes.

By the way when she contracted covid after the operation during recovery, keep in mind her immune system at this point is already low and she is healing, they were going to send her home with covid and while healing a week later.

I'm not a DR but I don't know why we had to insist this was a bad idea and it took some back and fourth before this stupid idea was corrected. Combine that with no one contacting her or us about the home assistance required with her care when she was sent home and all the other issues I have not listed yeah...

There must be lots of unnecessary deaths right now due to all these kinds of things affecting other people.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Don't be sorry. I'm not sure we'll ever get back to 'normal' as the NHS has been eviscerated. Like you say, who the hell would want to work there now.
Its a miserable situation, neither side of our government seem to want to do anything realistic about.

Its being held up by tooth picks at this point, anything will make it collapse.

Lets not forget this lot were protesting outside hospitals calling covid a hoax.

A doctor has spoken of his devastation after encountering a crowd of maskless revellers shouting "Covid is a hoax" outside London's St Thomas's hospital on New Year's Eve.
Dr Matthew Lee said he was "disgusted but mostly heartbroken" after filming the group outside the hospital where medics battled to save Prime Minister Boris Johnson's life last year after he contracted coronavirus.

The accident and emergency doctor posted a video of a crowd of people outside the entrance to the hospital near Waterloo on Thursday night.

On New Years eve of all times.

So in the last 12 years they have had the government telling them they could be replaced and to just get on with it then they had Hunt goading them to strike and then when they stepped up to the plate yet again and these idiots come along. It must be pretty soul destroying to still be reading covid deniers writing stuff.

Edit: Wrong post quoted. Sorry @Goodie if this confused you about anything you posted.

Then you got morons like this lol.

Are there any flu viruses spreading through the UK population at the moment?

We've both come down with something, no coughing, but lots of aching and fatigue that could be flu or covid. Negative lfts yesterday, only been up less than an hour so far today, so yet to do another lift.

Neither of us have knowingly had covid since the very start in March 20, better half could feel this new infection above her long covid after i had struggled through work yesterday.

Edit: Negative again today for me from nasal swab, better half yet to test today.
LFT aren't picking this variant up early. If it's like out lot you'll be a couple of days in before the test shows positive

I saw some videos on the "ZERO COVID POLICY" in China and its completely bonkers. Absolute dystopian stuff happening right now.

The local government is literally breaking down doors to check and see if there are people hiding in their homes and leaving it open.

There's something like 110k jobs to fill in the NHS at the moment including 12,000 doctors and nearly 50,000 nurses. There's no wonder it's struggling.

Because the secondary effects of lockdowns are far from over.
I was and I'm sure others will testify hugely negative about the lockdowns and the impingement of freedoms. However as the solidarity moved from the young to the older/vulnerable people in society it allowed time for society to learn and adapt. Gave time for the vaccine to be developed and also keep our heads above water.

However I was liked a coiled spring and went out and traveled as soon as I could.

Yes there are negative impacts of lockdown. However, the true lockdown was only 3 months really and if you wanted to you could make it work. Like for example, meeting up with people for a walk in the countryside. Technically it may have been a breach of the law, but actually still remaining relatively safe.

Then within months you were able to go to people's homes and so on. Sure, I agree. It's not the same but If you look at things now it is pretty much how it used to be give or take. Events like this change society and life, just like the times before the Blitz people's lifestyles changed afterwards for the better or for the worse.

It bought time for the NHS and universities to study and help propose options. The "B" word hasn't helped in terms of staff and so on, but it is what it is. The NHS was on its knees before covid this was just the catalyst for making it more visible.

Yes, mental health issues are at all time high. Yes, there are secondary effects and impacts but that's just another element of this crisis that has to be dealt with. You would not have been able to avoid the secondary effects even if we hadn't had a lockdown.

So I just tested positive this morning. Started feeling not quite right yesterday so did a test and was negative, woke up this morning feeling awful and then tested positive. First time I officially have it. Pretty sure I had the original varient the week before the first lockdown, but couldn't get a test without being sent to hospital at that point.

The wife and I have had COVID for the first time this last week, the kids have had it it too. The kids where fine after 4 days. The wife and I seem to be having it a little longer. I Can honestly say I'd rather not have it again!!

My wife works and is still testing positive after 8 days and so am I. She wants to go back to work but I keep telling her she can't until the test is negative.

What are the guidelines for returning to work as obviously she doesn't want to give it to someone else. Should we just wait for a negative test regardless of if were feeling better?

The guidelines:

Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you:
  • have any symptoms of COVID-19, and have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to go to work or do your normal activities
  • have tested positive for COVID-19 – this means it's very likely you have the virus

You wife needs to have a chat with her manager.
