COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

It is annoying that we're using the BA.1 vaccines instead of BA.5 for sure, the only wisdom from this could be that we intend to start boosting within a couple of weeks since supplies already exist, versus waiting until mid-late October for the BA.5 ones.

Presumably, the spring booster programme will make use of BA.5. Sucks for any of us who aren't above 75 though.

All that being said, BA.1 infection seemed to confer decent immunity to BA.5 based on the waves we had in the UK. Presumably the vaccine will be quite effective on that front.

Moderna have brought out a new covid vaccine. It's a mix of their first version + this omicron new part added in.

The BBC says;

The UK has become the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant.

Then they say its the BA.1 variant of Omicron, which as nearly vanished completely already. We're at BA.5 variant now.

Meanwhile the government championed AstraZeneca vaccine that they supported as it was British made.. now have no plans to order any more.

As I just explained in the post above yours, BA.1 immunity confers great immunity to BA.5. It's not perfect, but it is still better than nothing. We are not using AZ anymore mainly because of an abundance of caution over the really risky side effects such as the brain clots. Not worth it when mRNA vaccines are readily available.

I don't think its too much of an issue not being BA.5 (which would be unrealitic to have ready this early), as something like 90%+ have had BA4/5 and would have good immunity to it now already?

So the govt behind the curve as usual, and we have to cross our fingers and hope for the best. Its the british way.

I'd be interested to know where the evidence that the BA.1 confers great immunity to BA.5 ?

Do you have a link?

The government is 'behind the curve' when the UK is the only country in the world with an approved Omicron variant vaccine? You're suggesting waiting 2-3 more months into winter to start vaccinating 26m people on the assumption that a newer vaccine is slightly more effective and does actually get approved. Its lucky we don't have people like you in charge lol..

You need only look at the impact of the BA.5 waves. Over half of the people who got infected in that wave were those who had never had COVID before, or had gotten it before Omicron. That amounted to a tiny 15% of the population, or something like that, being responsible for >50% of the last wave.

Was very obvious that those who had BA.1 in January had gotten decent immunity from that.

Some people are always out to kick us Brits even when obviously it is also a self inflicted wound for them.

Well 4 of us - so are you saying we were all asymptomatic ?

More likely surely that we have not had it yet - but I get it doesnt tally with the pro-mask lobby.

Statically nearly half of all cases are asymptomatic, so yes, it is more likely you had it and never knew than never had it with the sheer exposure you would be having.

I've had it (at least twice) but was totally asymptomatic. My kids had it, again no visible or overt issues. It can happen. My wife had the first strain for sure as she lost her sense of smell/taste.

Not sure what this has to do with masks though. I wore one when I had to (i.e. when it was mandated). But I was at a high chance of getting it as I kept traveling and commuting, going to social events etc.... So I was under a lot of exposure.

I play football twice a week and have been for the past year or two. I probably had it and never knew
Indeed ever since the "hard" lockdown my life was back to normal (as normal as others were, i.e. some events, parks, entertainment venues etc... were still cancelled or limited in numbers, and so on).

However, I was still mindful that for some this was a difficult/worrying time for some, so didn't assume everyone was as relaxed as my network/social circles. This forum was atypical from my social experiences but it does make you realise the broad spectrum of opinions presented regardless of being right or wrong or just different interpretations of information. :)

Currently sitting in A and E and a nurse tried to remove someone from there for not wearing a mask. The dude says no sticks his AirPods back in and ignores her.
The nurse asks for security.

Some women decides to take matters into her own hands and confront this guy even though she was sitting 4+ metres away from him.

She walks up to him takes the AirPods out of his ears and gets in his face telling him to get out. Oh the irony.

Long story short, she throws the AirPods out the door and the guy flips out and chucks the case and then the AirPods at the woman before being escorted by security.

This woman literally made the situation worst and best of all, she wears her mask with her nose sticking out.

Tested positive today for the first time. I feel awful. Symptoms included high fever, vomiting, and body aches and pains. Also dizziness funnily enough.

However, they’re lesser than the symptoms I had when I believe I had it, but tested negative.
