Cruicial M4 0009 Firmware Update

They look fine to me, getting a better write than I am too

thats weird then it just feels generally slow, it takes about 40-50s to load windows and loading firefox and stuff like that isnt instant like my previous ssd. :(

40-50 seconds to load windows? something is wrong there then! My 3 year old Samsung F1 loaded windows faster than that on with a E8600!

When you installed Windows to this SSD did you have other drives attached to the system? I have seen that if you have other drives attached at the time of install it can throw some files on them too.

Yer I've got another SSD and 1TB hard drive.

When installing windows I had all drives attached, bios settings for AHCI for SSD's and IDE for Hard drive. Finished installing windows and have some windows files on my other SSD. Also somehow all my drives were set to IDE, so went into bios and changed all drives to AHCI.

So was the SSD set to IDE when you installed?

This is my first SSD but when I installed with it set up as IDE (my mistake) the read and write times were really really slow. I reinstalled with only the SSD connected and set to AHCI and now all is fine.

No it was set AHCI in the bios when installing windows, but when running AS SSD it said I was running it in IDE and pciide was bad? So I went into the regedit and looked for msachi and pciide which were set to 0 already.
Should I just do a fresh reinstall of windows with only my M4 SSD, then once installed put my hard drive and ssd back in?

That is what I would do, but if you have had it installed for a while and got everything set up the way you like, that might be more hassle than its worth, might be worth making a post for someone with more experience to look at first? :)

Lucky I havent got much installed, I've got all my important stuff on my 1TB hd. I'll try the fresh install again, if that fails then I'll go further guidence I think :) thanks for the help

Thanks very much for the advice Duke & Orcvader. I think I'll go ahead and use it on the onboard SATA2 ports, it'll still be a lot faster than a standard HDD anyway.....and it gives another reason to upgrade the motherboard and CPU in a few months! :D

Due to running out of space on my 500GB drive, I decided to get one of these (128GB version) based on this thread and all the reviews. Should be arriving tomorrow. Means I can have the 500GB drive purely for storage and the SSD for OS, games and apps.

Just tried to update the firmware on my M4 SSD to 0009.

Burnt the ISO file to DVD.

Set the SATA mode to IDE.

It boots from the DVD fine, runs the utility.

Then it just hangs whilst detecting disks.

My motherboard is Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Z-68

anybody have any ideas why it isn't detecting the disk?

Cheers

B

If you have any other drive plugged in, remove them and make sure the ssd is connected to the main controller usually port 0

hmm no replies to my post?

Hi mate, its safe most people use a bootable usb to update the drive :)

If I buy one of these, and want to do a clean refresh install of windows.

Do I flash the drive first with latest firmware as listed above, then set to AHCI, and go about installing windows?

you can flash it first then change back to AHCI mode and continue to install windows?

Ordered some new components from ocuk to upgrade my system including a Crucial m4 64gb drive, expecting them to arrive tomorrow and have burnt the 009 update already, think its worthwhile updating the firmware before even installing windows?

There is no harm in it. If I had the disk made up before I setup the system I would have done it that way.

Just make sure your storage controller/sata mode is set up to IDE mode before you update the firmware and changed back to AHCI mode before you install windows or you will end up reinstalling windows like I did :(

Yeah makes sense to.

can somebody help me please....just installed my new 128 GB m4 and im only getting 404mb on atto.....running it on my asus rampage 3 extreme on the marvell controller (6gb) with 009 firmware, i have set achi in the bios for the marvell controller and have just done a fresh install of w7 64bit so only 20gb on the drive just now...is this my max with this crappy marvel controller?

i goggled it and it is the case....how can they get away with claiming sata 3 when its more like sata 2.5.....its not Marvell im feeling right now its disgust... I know windows index is crap but it rates the drive on this controller at 5.9

Do you have a regular HDD on there too? I don't know if windows tests all drives on the system to get the rating - but I used to get poor windows index results on my SSD until I disconnected any HDDs.
