Cruicial M4 0009 Firmware Update

So i'm stuck, the M4 i have installed works great and i have no problems. But it's on 0002 and my Bios only have options for ACHI or RAID. Is there a work around?

PS - i get 7.4 on mine as well.

Could quickly borrow the use of a mate's PC to run the FW update? It doesn't take long!

Seeing as there are performance issues with the Marvell controller, does the controller vary depending on your mobo and its chipset?

My M4 64GB scores 7.9 & that's with an F3 as storage.

It's quite odd that the M4 should perform poorly with a Marvell controller when you consider that the M4's on-board controller is Marvel!

I guess it's because Marvel only provide the controller & don't actually write the firmware unlike the Sandforce SSD's...

Just got my C400 64GB drive and perform amazing on 009 firmware!

Crucial make the M4's in house so to speak, they also provide their Micron nand chips too, Micron is a sister company to Crucial, and yeah they also update their own firmware in house.

Looking into purchasing either the 64/128gb Crucial M4 but I'm not sure on how it'll perform with my mobo. Currently got an i7 920/Asus P6TD Deluxe (Sata II)/6gb DDR3/5870 etc - from what I've read my mobo has the Marvel controller which I've heard doesn't like to cooperate very well with SSD's?

Could anyone share any light on this? Would love to purchase one whilst they're on offer!

Not sure what size to go for either. OS will be on it obviously, possibly a couple games but that's it. Music etc will be on my 1TB Caviar Black.

Thanks in advance.

if its the marvel 9128 controller you have then its capped at 400mb same as mine but is still silly fast and when i upgrade mobo in future its like a free ssd upgrade aswell...... happy days:)

your board has this on the marvell controller

Marvell 88SE6111
1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
1 xExternal SATA 3.0 Gb/s port (SATA On-the-Go)

so it looks like its got external sata3 but no internal so 280-290mb you will get with your sata 2 chipset

From the Asus website
Southbridge
6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports
Intel Matrix Storage Technology Support RAID 0,1,5,10
Marvell 88SE6111
1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
1 xExternal SATA 3.0 Gb/s port (SATA On-the-Go)

I'm mad confused at the moment haha, don't wanna fork out the money if I know it's gonna run like crap :/

That's roughly what you'll get with Sata II though isn't it?

There is such a thing as a free lunch it seems!

I don't know why I didn't think of at least checking if a firmware update was available, but glad I did - my drive was on 0001

Update went perfectly and there's a great performance increase - over 100MB/sec for reads. Boot time seems quicker but I've not timed it.

This is on a non-Marvell 6Gb port and cable with my WD Black 1Tb on port 2. Free space is 12GB.

Got to say, my M4 128 GB has been one of my better upgrades of late. Bought on release and still very happy - wasn't keen on the compression techniques of OCZ, plus reported reliability issues. I'm still on sata 2 (posted my results earlier in the thread) but coming from a WD raptor drive for boot the performance gains is very noticeable from day to day usage – also I don’t miss the noise one bit! :D

To cut through all the confusion here...

You have 6 SATA 3 Gbps ports on the Intel ICH10R controller ("SATA 2"). You also have 1 eSATA 3 Gbps port and 1 PATA port on the Marvell controller ("SATA 2").

You do not have any SATA 6 Gbps ("SATA 3") ports. However, the Intel controller is the best you can get for SATA 3 Gbps and you'd still notice a huge improvement over an HDD, you just won't get full performance when doing sequential reads/writes.

Just run the upgrade - wow, impressed with the performance!

Windows boots so fast the Windows logo doesn't even pulsate! :D

Loving it!
