So a 130i isnt a hot hatch?

I did think of that one, and I knew you'd comment. There no real definition as said but why I wouldn't consider it:

It is fundamentally a short wheel base RWD saloon from a premium manufacturer. Unlike the European hatches that started it that people got as first cars. If you want a small sport BMW you get an M3.

Not sure about the scruff of the neck raggability and how much you can exploit on the road. The Escort Cosworth for example most certainly isn't one.

Anyway thread detour over for now, super mini segment didn't even exist when the 205 was launched. CRZ isn't really a hot hatch even if it was fast as there is only one powertrain variant of it.

Car classification is whatever the manufacturer wants it to be with the intention to sell as many of them as possible. you can stit there till you're blue in the face arguing that the G7 Celica is a Coupe when in fact it's a hatchback, or is it hot hatch, or is it a shopping trolley? No it's defiantly a Coupe.

The A B C classification actually makes sense and aids the discussion I think.

For example the 205 gti is a group b super mini. On account of its size etc. It just hapoens to be one of the fastest (by virtue of lightweight) and reasonable power for its category. It should be competing like for like against cars of B class so a modern alternative would be the Colt Ralliart.

it just so happens that the pug 205 has performance that catches up to the tail end of a larger and more power set of 'hot' cars from group C. On average performance for grp B cars is usually lower than those of group C (hot model for hot model) ao really the 'hot hatch' moniker that gets banded about is overused and is thrown at any old car with a short base and a hatch.

But it doesn't make sense to be comparing 1000kg cars 130bhp cars to larger models with double or more power.

When reviewing a Yaris it will be compared to other grp B cars not a Golf etc

This discussion is almost as pointless as the original thread! :p

Corsa VXR and 205 GTi are both hot hatches in most people's eyes, and are therefore hot hatches. Case closed! :p
