You're not the only one. I'd rather have a car that I can get 100% from and love every second than something that meant after a prod at the accelerator, you'd have to slow it before it got out of hand/well over the limit.

They're classed as being 'fizzy' and not hot hatches though. But because of my reasoning above, that's why - for example - I'd choose the new Golf GTI over any of its competitors. It's ''slower'', but more useable - and still a hot hatch. :p

I remember one fateful night, having a little bit of fun along a clear, open country road which I thought I knew well, and suddenly the gradual sweeping left-hander I expected coming over the brow of the hill, was a right hand hairpin, and then, as I sat in that field, having left number 11 braking marks in the road, gone across a gravel car park, gone up a slight bank, and taken out a wooden fence, I remembered that it was further up the road where the sweeping left hander was. :p

The difference being, that the only damage was a split front bumper, half a numberplate missing, and some grass stuck in some places where it ought not have been. :rolleyes:

I dunno, I know it's universally regarded as a hot hatch and all but it was a rally homologation much like your Escort Cosworth's and Pulsar GTI-R's, and I personally think they are in a separate category of their own, power wise they were the equivalent of your M135's and Golf R's.

To me the likes of 205 GTI, Renault 5 GT Turbo, Golf GTI, Civic VTI, Corrolla GTI's etc were hot hatches of the day.

No they were just cheap affordable superminis snapping at the heals of the big boys.

Like now you have a corsa vxr is it a hot hatch? Is the fiesta St? Not in the face of the competition from the astra vxr or focus st/rs.

Same principle it's just they are quite warm but more affordable to the man on the street.
 
Why must we catagorise cars so precisely? Why can't a Fiesta ST be a hot hatch that happens to be smaller and slower and cheaper than a Focus ST?

Is a Lamborghini Gallardo not a supercar because it is smaller, slower and cheaper than a Reventon?

It is silly... A hot hatch is just a hatchback that was designed with speed in mind. I don't see why any other factors have to matter too much. I've never even heard someone say "warm hatch" before, that just sounds stupid. I suppose a Fiesta Zetec S or a Polo 1.4 Sport 100 would be a luke warm hatch, and a Corsa 1.2 or a Focus 1.0 EcoBoost is a cold hatch? Is my Polo 55PS a stone cold hatch?

I've heard 'warm hatch' used for years, going back to the mk2 Astra SR (and subsequently SRi) in the early 90s.

Except they weren't your cheap little supermini's, they were vatsly upgraded over the other model specs, they had more powerful engines, better handling, upgraded suspension, better aero, gearbox etc, the 205, golf etc are all regarded as hot hatches not just mere standard supermini's. The Focus ST is very mild compared to an A45, how do you compare the two?

I guess it comes down to what you define a hot hatch to be. For me it is your regular hatchback that has been given a more powerful and sportier engine with upgraded suspension for better handling, more focused, bit of sportier body kit, something that is usable, fund to drive but affordable.

Something like an A45 isn't, and the price is just silly, the Delta Integrale HF would have been of that ilk in its day. By that standard too the Focus ST is a warm hatch.
 
hot hatch = oven door :p

ragging around with my mate in is 4 speed 1.2 nova :p we considered that a hot hatch.....a scary hatch too :p bottoming out the suspension going around corners too fast o.O
 
Shame about insurance NAthan. Just got my dc2 insured for 380 pounds with mods and cat D declared on Adrian Flux. Even tho i had full claim on it few years ago...

Thats why i love DC2 they are cheap to insure run fix . And still fun to drive. Could not believe 2 asian chaps wanted to race off lights in gt 86.. Got their asses destroyed lol

I was thinking those things are faster till i googled 0-60 and got disappointment :( gt86/brz are slow in stock :(

So by your definition a suzuzi ignis sport is a hot hatch? It's relative not only to the models in its family range but by what other marquees are doing outside of it too. Of course it's all very subjective and like I said changes over time.

Car classification is whatever the manufacturer wants it to be with the intention to sell as many of them as possible. you can stit there till you're blue in the face arguing that the G7 Celica is a Coupe when in fact it's a hatchback, or is it hot hatch, or is it a shopping trolley? No it's defiantly a Coupe.
 
I thought a Super Mini can have a 1.0 3 cylinder engine and stilts for suspension, my point being it describes the size and type of a particular kind of hatch back, but then where does "City Car" come come in to that, a class smaller maybe

Celica is an odd one, a coupe with a hatch back but its overall shape defines it as a coupe

You could say the same for the Jaguar XK, it's got a hatchback :)

I'm with the hot hatch being a standard practical hatchback that's been taken further in the handling, braking, engine performance & styling departments. Course some of that is open to interpretation, you could say the original Fiesta Zetec-S was a hot hatch but would you say the same of the Mk6 version which Ford sold in parallel to the Fiesta ST?

In the end there's no right or wrong answer, some are obvious then there's always a grey area and a lot depends on how one car compares to it's competitors and peoples perception of their relative performance.
 
Well one thing I stick by is that hot hatches are FWD. It's part of the thrashability and how the define the walk from the Joe Public base car.
