*** Cyberpunk 2077 ***

I had time off booked, mainly because WFH and we can’t really do much. I generally don’t go abroad on holiday at all and have loads of days to use as well so figured ‘why not?’

Not allowed!!

Jonney says that is weird. Be a normal person and go to a football match or something (when it opens again).

:p:D

I'm happy its delayed. Gives me more time to invest in other toys instead.

I can probably hold of buying a GPU until December now which means I'll see the 6800XT benchmarks and be able to compare it to the 3080 benchmarks for a 100% informed decision on which GPU is best to move forwards with.

I dont get the faux concern over staff.

If anyone really cares so much about the devs being 'forced' to work longer, and CDPR's bad practices, dont buy the game? Because you are just supporting them if you do.

Are they not being paid for these extra hours? Anyone who has a serious job, has had to work extra hours at some point in their career. Especially when it involves project deadlines. If the staff are so unhappy, they could always get another job?

It sucks the games delayed, but Id rather it comes out in a more 'finished' state, than being plagued with bugs and a poor release.

There were similar concerns about Devs having to work longer on Red Dead 2. The Devs themselves said they still want people to buy the game. A lot of them are at the top of their game within the industry and want people to experience the work they have put in. As long as work hours are not 100% forced indefinitely and everyone is well compensated. Then there should not be an issue.

The twitter posts were saying booking time off for for sick days. And screaming about the game, that's what i meant by booking time off.

Anyway, enough now. This is dragging on and on.

Twitter is toxic, and they did promise no more set backs. Don't use a few shouty people to base your opinion on people who take time off to play games.

Exactly. Its hillarious.

We have child labour in third world countries but the trendy internet crowd want to concentrate on game developers who need to work a lot harder close to deadline of a game.

During COVID, medical staff were working 13 hours, 7 days straight.
My friend who is a lawyer if he is close to deadlines sometimes has to wake up for 5AM, get to work and leave at 1AM. This is just part and parcel of life to a degree.

If you don't like it, quit and pick up a normal 9 to 5.

Its still modern day salary

I assume you mean slavery?

It's really not though is it, and suggesting it's even close is just trivialising actual modern day slavery.

The game development industry is notorious for crunch when it comes to release dates (not mention relatively low salaries). There's nothing forcing anyone to work in these roles; as Aoaaron says, there are plenty of other development jobs out there which pay better and have better working conditions, but they aren't as "cool" as getting your name on the credits of a triple A, multi-million sale game.

Exactly. Where are the protestors for doctors and nurses and cleaners who were overworked dangerously over COVID?
Absolutely no where. But we have people whiteknighting game developers. Its pathetic.

They know what they're getting themselves in for when going into game development and its far from modern day slavery when you get paid for every single hour you work, you can walk out of your job at any moment in time etc. We all make choices with our lifestyles and jobs, and you get what you signed up for. Its up to employees to ensure they know the perks and the cons of the job and industry they're going into.

Is 'crunching' ideal? No, but neither is a doctor staying late or working above the european worktime directive, bankers working far beyond their allotted times to try and get ahead in their jobs (I know some people who wake up at 5AM and get home by 9 in london) or lawyers working from 5AM to 11PM to meet deadlines for clients.

Maybe some would describe all of this as modern day slavery but why in the world does the video game industry and it's crunches get so much more in terms of the tear jerking articles and responses and terms such as 'slavery' being thrown about?

Finally.. the phrase 'modern day slavery' in itself frustrates me to no end. Do people know what slavery was? It was far far far far worse than the 'crunches'. Bit of perspective would be great. Children in third world countries in factories being overworked by NIKE but some people think its more important to bash CDProjectRED than the other villains.. ok...

People do understand I hope that in the 'modern day', there are far far far worse circumstances which would be closer to slavery than what video game developers have to go through 1-2 months before a game's release.
