D&D 5e, starting a game soon, any DM's have tips?

It's certainly one of the more deadly defensive spells, Tempest Clerics can be quite dangerous to fight one-on-one at early levels.

A little hit around the face is hardly cause for proceeding to remove 2/3rd's of someones health.

That was a very powerful spell for 1st level, are you sure you were meant to have that :p

I think it's a special ability linked with the class, you were lucky he didn't one shot you :D

Because you unruly gits I now need to manufacture a character meeting in the middle of a cave!

When I heard "does 2d8 damage" I did think I had snuffed it there and then. Luckily Dwon Fai has reflexes like a cat ... on cat nip.

Luckily it's a reaction ability so only happens once per round, otherwise all of us would have been hurting quite a bit.

Any clues on what Mordred is going to come back as?

I was thinking about a paladin, but I don't think the group is "good" (or at least it doesn't seem to play that way) so I don't want to be another odd one out!

I think I might be the only character with a smidgen of good in their alignment (Neutral Good), so I probably have to be a little more careful about my actions than everyone else to prevent a major alignment shift.

How about taking the Oath of Vengeance for the Paladin?
According to the Player's Handbook those are typically Neutral or Lawful Neutral.

I think the best term for the group is "morally ambiguous" :p

I don't think the group is bad as such. More trying to find their way.

I created my character as Chaotic Neutral based on his past but I think leaving Waterdeep and striking out into the world might see him moving more towards Chaotic Good in the future as he's exposed to more life and death stuff. It's quite different scamming coin out of a noble to being out in the wilds with your life in danger.

For anyone reading Here is the sequence of events that leads up to Mordred's death:

Pre session drinking contest:

The morning after Mordred steals from the inn we stayed at, despite protests from the group. He ends up being robbed by one of the group after this (I'm actually not sure who)

Session 1:

First encounter, we are ambushed by goblins. Mordred alone refuses to participate, instead sitting in the cart drinking.
Later on inside the cavern fighting more goblins Mordred announces his intent to attack a sleeping goblin (magically asleep thanks to yours truly) instead of the very awake, very angry Bugbear. Some banter from the group ends up with Mordred changing his mind and casting negative magic on our druid.
After the encounter finishes Dwon Fai confronts Mordred over the spell and slaps him around the face. Mordred as a reaction casts a powerful spell at him that could have killed him. The rest of the group sees this as a final straw and takes out the threat.

Can we have a summary of characters? I'm still not entirely sure what classes we have and who is playing what exactly. Just a simple Name - Character name - Character class - Character race? Then I can keep it in my notes for reference.

Also Dave Sleep does affect allies, I'll have to be more careful where I cast it in the future (or maybe not, could be fun)

I'll provide a full write up to expand on what you wrote Shami, I'll also send you my sheet with names and classes etc.

From your write up you missed that during the drinking contest Mordred attempted to spike everyone's drinks and when that failed to mind control the other finalist (Hendel) into walking away from the competition :D

I believe it was Hendel that he tried to use Bane on, not Eriden.

Here's mine:
Andy - Eriden Thysilkin - Druid - Halfling

Well at least that makes Eriden seem taller than he is, I'm just glad nobody tried to force me to crawl through a tiny gap... that often happens to my Halflings.

John - Dwon Fai - Monk - Human - the one that punches everything as a bonus action.
Often after they're already dead from your spear. :P

Alex- Chance- Bard- Guy who misses with a crossbow unless it's a critical hit.

I'm Chaotic Good not that I stand out in our medley of madness...

Mordred was on a quest for vengeance so I don't want to do a repeat with a paladin. I was going to do the ancient oath one but I don't think a paladin all about love nature and happiness fits in.

It's worth pointing out Mordred saved Fyvel from death and had the ability to prevent Dwon Fai from dying, plus healing back to full health. So I could quite easily cast the spell safe in the knowledge the other PC would be fine in the short to long term! But I still got mobbed anyway :(

Edit: also in my grumpiness about my well thought out character background being killed last night, the actions really weren't "good"! Especially as first blow belonged to someone else!
