Danny Baker sacked

The thing is that you now have to second guess other people's interpretations as well as your own.

no, you just have to not be a ****head, if at all possible. The world has always had it's taboos. Either know them or fall foul. Danny Baker does not deserve your sympathy.

I'm mixed race (My mum is Caribbean, Dad is white). Back in the early 80's I remember walking with my mum and brother on Saturday in the centre of Wolverhampton and about 50 Wolves fans started chanting at us, "Pull that trigger, pull that trigger, pull that trigger and shoot that n*****". This was my first real taste of unabashed, racism.

Nowadays I don't really like the term 'Racist'. It's used for anything and anyone and sometimes by black people to mask their own failings. I tend not apply the term to people as I can't read minds and don't know their motives.

I have no idea what Danny Baker thinks about black people. The fact that he's a supporter of Millwall whose fans have dished out racist rhetoric for longer than most means nothing.

He has has not come out and said he did not know Megan Markle was mixed race and while not impossible, it would be highly improbable that a person who works in his position in broadcasting not know this. For him to have searched the internet for a picture of a chimpanzee with which to make reference to her baby is incredibly inane.

Whether he was being intentionally racist or not unfortunately for him his actions will only be viewed through the prism of racism. You can not refer to a baby, whose grandmother is black, as a chimpanzee and not expect it to be so.

I've always liked Danny Baker and wouldn't class him in the same category as the fans who 40 years ago gave abuse to my family. I hope he recovers from this much wiser but I have to ask myself, what on earth was he thinking?

Best post in the entire thread. Sums it up perfectly imo.

I referred to my cousins baby as a cheeky monkey and given that her partners family are all Caribbean I did feel slightly awkward after, but it was never intended to be said in a racist manor.

Pretty solid post that :)

Never heard of him so no idea who he is, but every little thing these days is called out as 'racist', so he should have known better.

Once at work I had to stop people using a lift unless they actually needed it due to the high number of people (mobility/visually impaired/pram etc only), and after letting a couple of white people use it that had a walking stick, a black woman came who looked fine, I told her she couldn't use the lift (as I did to every normal looking white person as well) and the first thing that came out of her mouth was 'It's because Im black, you're racist!'

My first reaction was that he can't have meant it. But he regularly tweets quirky photos in response to things and he seems to like a tipple. He must have understood the connotations and he must have known the ethnicity of all involved. So there you go.

To be honest nobody should be making a binary decision on who is or isn't able to use a lift or not without any context on their health, which is none of your business. Seems like a very weird job to have been given.

Don't really have a big interest in this subject. But find that he was fired by the BBC a step too far.
Who knows what he was thinking when he posted it. Beyond me. He deserves the backlash and the media storm as his actions encouraged that. But to sack him ?. This is a step to far.

If something is said with a purpose to hurt, offend or ridicule then yes that's racist. Being thick and doing so is not. It certainly looked racist but this does not mean it was. This point is the perception of the post that was seen as racist, which is of opinion to the reader. We have to be clear and not steer to far left or liberal on this one. We have to judge or what wa posted and what was stated. Image = questionable, text or racial intent = zero.

This also shows BBC has a strong political view that has left wing liberal all over it.

Good luck Danny Baker.

The catastrophic consequences for them of a public figure posting a racist joke on Twitter are so obvious that this itself is the clearest evidence he had no racist intent and simply doesn't think that way. If it even occurred to him that it would be taken this way he'd have had to be knowingly self-destructive to destroy his career over a throw-away joke.

Ergo, racist interpretations of it simply never occurred to him. This is logic.

For whatever reason he posted it, he should have known what the politically correct reaction would have been, i.e. that its racist.

If he doesn't have that level of awareness then he was a PR disaster waiting to happen.

Can’t get more succinct than that.

Nail on head, best post so far IMO.

To be honest it is (was, don't do that role anymore) very much my business when there are thousands of people passing through a tube station, to make sure those who need to use the lift are able to use it, as opposed to anyone else that is just lazy.

He’s a complete numpty, how was he not aware of the black people and primates comparison... the whole issue in football with bananas and chants etc...

His explanation doesn’t make any sense either.

Black mum, white Dad. She does look very white though. Someone who barely knows her would probably regard her as white. Someone like Danny Baker who doesn't know her background ethnicity then likens her son to an ape.

he didn't liken him to an ape.

he posted a pic of an ape in a suit saying the new baby had arrived. for comedy effect it only offended because it happened to be a monkey in the suit it could have easily have been a goat.

IMO he shouldn't have been sacked and all the coloured people on tv calling it a disgrace are morons just wanting publicity / money.
