Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

Oh yeah, and all you have to do is fall off the edge of a platform and hold down the attack button to do a lunging attack. Also if you have the black firebombs they're really good against the Taurus Demon too and those along with the lunging attack should finish him off,.

Unfortunately, I've used all my bombs up, though I could buy more from the trader (he had no pine resin the last time I went).

Just had yet another go at the Taurus Demon. I haven't defeated him, though I'm starting to get better at predicting his moves and the use of firebombs are proving to be a Godsend.

Edit : got the sod! :D

For me the first 'good' shields are either:

Knight Shield
Behind a balder knight in Undead Parish
Crest Shield
Dropped by Oscar of Astora, the Hollow Elite Knight during Undead Asylum revisit
Dragon Crest Shield
Near undead dragon in valley of the drakes, you can get this as soon as you get to firelink shrine if you have the master key.

Any of those shields will do you well against the first few bosses.

Thanks, I have the master key, so that may come in especially handy. :) Speaking of keys, I bought a key from the trader in the Undead Burg; one that allows you to enter residences. Was it worth me buying it or not?

Yes, it gets you some pine resin before the Taurus demon, and it allows you to free a merchant from the lower undead burg later on.
Actually on my current new start (I start from scratch a LOT in this game) I killed the merchant for his nice sword, and he drops the key when he dies.

Oh and also, I wouldn't bother upgrading any of those shields I mentioned, they are not that great late into the game, just good early shields.

Cheers, Southy. I may well go back and kill the merchant for his sword. Then again, my strength is a little low (12), so I may not be able to use it. I found a claymore a little earlier on, and that requires 16 strength iirc, so I need to boost my muscles up a fair bit.

What's the best starting item? I went with something that said about no idea on it's use or something. Also stats too heard to get to 16 str/dex and then you're good to go?

Also what about classes, really unsure what class to go :/

Game looks beautiful at 2560x1600 with everything on max :D Kept it to 30FPS as felt weird... I get an FPS drop when the game first loads for about 1 second then it's smooth after that.

Master Key is the best, everythink else is pants. There isn't best class as all can be the same later on, pyromancer is considered a good first char.

Well, I chose to be a knight and I also opted for the master key. I don't know whether I made a good choice or not, though I expect each class has an advantage of some sort over another, so perhaps there isn't a right or wrong. What I intend to do, is to make this character a sort of knight / mage, with a stronger element of melee in mind.

However, I think I'm right in saying that the master key is a good choice, but not essential.

The reason that pyro is considered a good choice is:
It starts at SL1, which means more freedom in what stats to pick up for the lower soul cost.
Pyro flame is really handy early on, especially for large groups of weaker enemies, and some early bosses. (Asylum Demon + Taurus Demon especially)

Master key is good for getting some early items, you can buy a master key from a merchant as well.

Wicked thanks mate.

Yea' thinking back I remember playing this on the xbox and I started a knight and really struggled, so started a pyromancer and ate through everything there was... Started a knight this time and got the parry/riposite thing down which makes life easier, I'm not far in to it though... Going to restart as didn't go for the key and only a hour or so in ( level 11 or something )

Southy mentioned that you can buy the master key, so maybe there's no need to restart?

Aaaa yea, I missed that. Some sound advice and that makes sense, I guess I could restart to become a pyro, not sure... I'll have a think. I think that is what made me stop playing last time though is due to constant restarts lol.

Yeah, this game pulls no punches if you get your build wrong. Any incorrect decision is punished harshly.

Personally I use the following (fairly common) way of levelling:
1) Get an easy to retrieve magic weapon/shield that will last a chunk of the game (Drake sword is a common choice, I like Astora's Straight Sword as well)
2) Increase your stats enough to use that weapon.
3) Focus on Vit then End up to 40 each.
4) Increase your main damage stat to around 40-50 and any other stats you need to use your weapon/armour set of choice and start upgrading your weapon/armour.
5) Put as many more points as you want into Vit. If you are going in for PvP you will want to increase Vit until you hit your desired SL.

It seems to work well because the early good sword can last about 1/3 of the game, or at least until BlightTown.
The early Vit is super helpful against the first few bosses.
Then as you start increasing your damage stat you can switch to your weapon of choice once it overtakes the damage.

Also, personally I would say don't be afraid to use a guide or the wiki if you get stuck.
It might feel like cheating, but this game is hard enough without getting totally lost and having no clue what you are doing, it really doesn't hold your hand through any of the 'quests'
Nothing worse than getting so annoyed you stop playing, when all it would take is a small hint on why you are dying to a certain boss.

So far, I've allocated points for just about all attributes, though I've focused on vitality, endurance and dexterity quite a lot more than the others.

Unless you plan on using magic/miracles as a secondary attack force or for weapon buffs which I wouldn't really recommend first time through, just focus ion Vit, End and Dex/Str depending on what weapon you're using (look at the 'Parambonus' in weapon stats screen).

Guys, any advice on how to run this game with no slowdown or random choppy frame rates?

My PC: 7970, 3930K@5Ghz, 32GB RAM, RAID0 SSDs

Choppy frame rates at random areas, eg: Just walking across the Drake bridge and it'll go choppy, go past same area again and it's fine, makes no sense to me..

Any fight that used fire or any FX and it slows to a crawl, lightning bolts were horrifically bad, sometimes even the soul FX cause a slowdown, this is particularly noticeable if the mob drops an item, the two 'glowies' just kill my FPS.

I've Googled for a fix and it seems many are having similar issues and it appears to point to the 7970 not having much to do so it runs slower, then an effect happens which causes the GPU to speed up which is causing the problems, makes sense to me anyway.

I installed the DSFix and now the game won't even start...

Dsfix can be a bit temperamental. Making a new game and saving before installing Dsfix sometimes helps. You will need version 2.0 or 2.0.1.

Test the 'choppy' areas without the fix too.
