Darkfall - Jan 22nd (maybe...)

I'm still hoping Huxley turns out good, no idea when its due though.

2038 i reckon. I thought it sounded like a possibility at first, future, guns, fps style combat but then much later on it turned out it was going to be, towns where you can all hang out but all combat is instanced with smallish teams and the more I heard the more I felt like it was CS:S with a player lobby to talk before joining a game and I was less and less enthusiastic, not to mention it was due, 18 months ago or something ridiculous :p

You never know :p

Jumpgate, is that the name of the stargate mmo? If so it could be amazing, SG-1 had so many great characters and storys, if it focused on the beginning you could have it in a kind of lotro style with the already established story taking place and you're following essentially a concurrent storyline where you'd be sg-2 through sg-7888575 depending on how many players there were. The teaming up with other people for massive assualts and defending planets. But mmo after mmo just feel like total let downs, War was so hyped and soooo crap.

Tempted to go back to City of Heroes for a bit, really great game if lacking a little content, from such a initially small team its pretty great though and is really the only decent superhero game of the past decade, or two.

The stargate one is called Stargate Worlds, Jumpgate is the space shoot em up :).

SIGH. Thats the only thing on the forum. I hate being right, especially in regards to this game. Cmon dammit, prove me wrong!

Update made at 4am GMT 2/26

A bug was discovered during final testing, and we need to resolve it before we can open up the servers. We didn’t want to launch to just say we launched. We can’t apologize enough for the long delay. The current ETA is two hours but it could be longer. We will launch as soon as possible and we will keep you updated.

We have extended the free month to 33 days to compensate for the inconvenience. Problems will occur from time to time but we need you to know that we’re committed to supporting this game to the best of our ability. It’s unfortunate that we are facing these issues at launch, and we’ll do everything we can to make this up to you.

The game is running apparently, I'll try to get a copy..

Servers are finally opening up after a 12 hour delay. Processing the pre-orders took much longer than the original estimate we were given, and we caught a bug at the last minute that we didn’t want to launch with. We apologize for the long delay and we hope you enjoy your first day in Darkfall.

For the players that are getting lobby errors, check your version and if you don’t have build 1.0.35, get it from http://www.eu1.darkfallonline.com/dl/Darkfall.exe

We have extended the free month of play to 33 days to thank you for your patience and to try to begin making up for the inconvenience.

We’ll process the problematic pre-orders that were not charged, and have 0 balance later today. If you pre-ordered successfully but weren’t charged, or haven’t received your final notice for the remaining successful charge, you’ll need to be patient a few hours longer. We’ll also look at opening up more sales by tomorrow. We are a little behind schedule but we're catching up.

Forums have been down due to large volume, almost double our highest traffic to date, people weren’t able to access them. We brought them down in order to be able to post communications so you would know what was going on. MMORPG.com was kind enough to post our first announcement but we need to be able to communicate through the official Darkfall community. Darkfall IRC was causing the Stratics network problems with its volume and it was also temporarily shut down at Stratics request. The forum will be back as soon as possible, and we hope we can keep it up.

We’ll do our best to keep you updated.

Thank you

The Darkfall Team

Nothing else good MMO wise is out anytime soon is it?

Sadly not, in fact in my opinion the MMO market is in a very very dire situation. All of the "big" titles that have come out recently have comparatively flopped. AoC for example now has less than 100,000 subscribers and Funcom posted losses of $23.3 million. Some of the smaller titles are still doing ok, financially at least, but nothing that is going to headline the genre.

I look at the upcoming MMOs and I see nothing which will revive the genre, WoW surely cannot keep steaming ahead for too much longer. a lot of the WoW fans I know have said themselves that they feel that WoW has lost its way with recent changes and the WoTLK expansion.

Developers have been put off by the AoC and Warhammer situations and are now getting more hesitant to create MMOs, along with the global financial situations considering the amount that MMOs cost to develop.

For the first time in 12 years, I am actually finding myself having more fun with my non-MMO games. Perhaps though its just me having had enough now of MMOs. 12 years is quite enough time to be almost playing a single genre I guess, but at the moment and for the near future the MMO market is looking damn stale.

I'd say a lot of investors have gotten badly burnt with recent failures too, I'd imagine very few are willing to pour money into an mmo in the current climate.

I wish someone would buy Tabula Rasa :(

He just didn't make it a UO in space, that's all. It's a brilliant game for what it is - story / instance based sci-fi mmo with loads of polish and really good combat.

Edit - apparently he is thinking of making a medieval mmo again. Fingers crossed it might be something a bit different.

Shame about the Darkfall launch but no real surprise given the size of the developing studio and the public interest in the game. I think I'll be giving it another couple of months before I consider subscribing to it.

I'm surprised that the developers didn't go with one of the main publishers like EA, Codemasters or even SOE for launch.

It's obviously a possibility but I would assume whoever it was would take a massive chunk of the profits to get involved basically. Codemasters would probably for instance want to do what they've done with Lotro, take over certain area's run the servers, updates and everything themselves and obviously take a decent portion of the subscription money for themselves, which obviously cuts out a lot of cash for the developer.

To be fair, what happens, one day late on launch, infact it was only 12 hours, isn't a big deal in something that even if it launched on time people would have trouble logging in for days anyway due to the load of people. Think WOLTK and the queues people had the first few days. Infact almost all the launches of updates and new games have issues. Lotro had a great launch but multiple updates have been pushed back as buggy, taken much longer to install than they promised(though AFAIK mostly codemasters screwing stuff in europe, patches always the week before under Turbine themselves in the states).

It might even work for them doing a limited release in batches, going to big too soon and not getting enough people could finish them, while keeping the hype going, making it hard to get and slowly growing might work great for them. not only because they can add more content and fix more things as the game grows. Still can't decide if I'm going to get it or not though :p

AS for the MMO market, its not that theres no money or theres this/that or the other, people are just making bad games. War just sucks, for me its like playing CS:S you log in, you join a scenario, theres several different maps you play for 15 minutes and you join another "room". THe actual gameworld is pathetic, unoriginal, boring, empty, dull, no story and looks like turd to me. The scenarios aren't much better but at least you got people in them.

THing is people are all trying to "do something new/original" and ignoring gameplay just so they can claim to have a new feature or be about something else. Hopefully Stargate, Startrek will just have a decent backstory and be just good gameplay good stories and fun to play, few others have a possibility of being good. It seems ridiculous how people find and think up one "new" feature and ignore everything else they need and think the one new thing will somehow make a great game all on its own.

I'm really glad they're an independent dev company without any of the big publishers breathing down their necks or trying to push them into changing the game.

Been a poor start, but hopefully they'll iron out the problems soon.

A month or two and you'll get a sense of the direction theyre going then. Hope the reviews stay away for a bit.

they'll have no chance of getting a key anyway :p with the what appear to be 10k's of people htiting F5 all night long waiting for sales to open they haven't a chance in hell :p

The only other thing that seems worrying is, it appears you can only have one character per server? I understand they are wanting to limit how much one clan can spy on an enemy clan, and I guess with the fact any race can be in any clan its difficult. BUt it means if you have a mage type damage dealer but want to play a palladin you'll have to do it on a completely different server.

I tend to be one of those who tries lots of different types of class playstyle. Though these are a bit more broad in terms of you can do a bit of everything, clearly stats you go for and paths you take in prestige class will limit you in certain area's significantly.

Its why I think a more WoW style 2 specific sides with multiple races would give a real enemy at all times, aswell as adding the ability to roll multiple characters but keep it to one side per server.

Nah, I like the single character idea. In a full PvP world you should always be identifiable and answerable for your actions.

It's a bit restrictive, but suits the kind of game Darkfall is.

yes and no, the problem is if you spend months getting up to be a mage with everything at lvl 100, then some "balancing" makes you hate your class, well actually I do believe you can respec fine and re-level back with new skills, but maybe you won't want to. or if you find a great server with a clan full of friends and lots of help but to play a few more alts you are forced to go to a new server, meh.

I guess that you can change classes means there's no really locking you into anything. Though I'm not sure you can change the schools of magic you use, as you can only use 2 of the 4 elements, can't use say fire and water. Not sure if you choose water you can drop it later and choose fire.

I actually also really like the 1 character per server thing, in my 4 years in UO, I changed my character many many times. He started out as an armour laden tank with no magical abilities, then he moved away from the platemail and moved to a more dexterity based leather type of character, then he became more of a necromancer type and in the final days of his life before he died to his nemesis (an ongoing story that I ran with my character for a couple of years) he became weak and withdrawn and wore mainly non-military clothing and wielded no weapon.

Hopefully having 1 character will make people think a bit more about their character and his/her personality and story, instead of just churning out 1 max level character after another WoW-style.

Been interested in Darkfall since hearing about it years ago, thought it could end up being vaporware so I'm glad its finally seeing the light of day.

Is it supposed to be out today and is there much chance of getting a (digital) copy?

Also, to anyone who has played the beta, is it actually any good?

The servers are up now and they say they will let more people buy it tomorrow, but no one really knows.

I was in beta and I believe they have the basis of what could be one of the best MMO's to date. However, it is VERY rough around the edges and needs a lot more work. This, compounded with the fact that they have no business or organisational skills what so ever, means that unfortunately the game experience is just nowhere near the quality of what it should be.
