Darkfall - Jan 22nd (maybe...)

Hmm, the thing is, for some reason its all very quiet they haven't done a big launch and their site is pretty terrible, not least because it doesn't seem to size to my window and looks designed fora 640x480 resolution or something stupid.

I kind of assume there would be a decent story/quests going on because they mention quests, but apparently theres some quest chains for a bit of money but theres no story, its just the standard get 10 teeth from beastie type X.

So essentially it sounds like its going to be, grind out levels on mob's, everyone is lvl 100 on everything, then its all fighting each other, people hoping that enough groups join up with enough other groups to fight opposing massive groups in wars basically. But it could also just end up being almost every man for himself and nothing to really do.

I don't know, a little story and some actual opposing sides seem like a pretty key thing to leave out. AFAIK any race can be in a clan with any group, rather than cutting a line in the middle of them and making half the races able to join together if they want, but always a proper enemy.

I dunno, it might be fun, it might not but it sounds like all grind, with no story, just to fight people to get their kit, just to be killed and have your stuff taken. I'm not really seeing the "point".

I dunno, I've always liked Lotro for its really good story and some great quests/instances they take you into, but its so ridiculously easy I'm bored to tears with it. I want a harder game but I'm not sure I'll find any depth or longevity in a game that after you've leveled up all your skills and done anything, is just a free for all slugfest with supposedly not fantastic combat, no story, no reason for anything except people who enjoy ganking others.

Player driven story sounds great in theory, if you could somehow exlude all 12 year olds and old bellends from the game. leaving it completely down to the players, when you can't exclude the morons is risky as hell.#

hmm, that "HD" video does look pretty awful tbh, aswell as I'm rather expecting thats what 99% of the combat you'll be involved in will turn into, gankfest with one guy running off straffing all the way hoping to get away, it doesn't seem like its going to be particularly, fun, innovative, have anything to actually do once you've run around once and seen everything.

Yes, the ideal situation is half the server is in clans allied with enough other clans, you want to attack the othersides main city and thousands of people join up for a battle royal and stand and fight in glory and major coolness. But in reality even if that happened, you'd just get a screen full of people straffing in circles randomly killing people they weren't shooting at.

Real aiming shooting sounds great, but in reality it doesn't become skill, it becomes, 5 people chasing one and 1 in every 10 arrows will hit, not skill, just quantity, it just doesn't sound fun. Even more so with arrows needing to be bought/found and most magic stuff needing reagents too. It sounds like a grind with no content to me the more I read. But its also difficult as people say lots of bits didn't make it into the beta, theres things people haven't seen and people seem to have all played different stages of the beta with lots of different features in each so almost impossible to know what state its in.

Mind you of course, UO didnt have a single quest or instances in it, and had no real story either or opposing sides. It also had nothing more than everyone skilling up their skills and then essentially just a free for all slugfest and ganking. Yet it was the MMO that I played the longest (4 years) (and ironically was also the MMO that had the best RP in it of any I played (at least on the server I was on, Catskills))

They're aiming for an evening release and as greece is ahead of us time wise (I think) we'll hopefully be entering soon if what they say is anything to go by.

The servers aren't live are they?

I managed to get a pre-order but when i try to log in i'm getting the message 'account not active'

i think one servers up, maybe not, I honestly don't have a clue as can't get on the forum to find out.

For some people the pre-order didn't go through but they were going to reuse the card details, but I guess if you didn't have the card details stored they wouldn't be able to put the transaction through again maybe, it wasn't clear as I never got a chance to actually order myself. So its possible you're isn't active because the payment didn't work.

Who the smeg knows, I can't decide if I'm going to buy it, I've got nowt else to play, time off and I'm bored so thats what it has going for it. Downsides appear to be, no story, having to join guilds to do anything useful in it, which is fine but I find so many people annoying when they talk/type constant crap. Then the combat, from video's just all seems to be smaller group runs away straffing and large groups of people firing volleys of arrows/magic attacks at range at those fleeing eventually taking them down, but that seems to basically be the entire game.

Nothing else good MMO wise is out anytime soon is it?

Considering the cost of this kind of game, time it took, It seems a touch ridiculous they can't add a couple extra servers for the forum and some loadbalancing.

Their news updates have been pretty pathetic aswell by all accounts, they announced last night that there would be more pre-orders available this evening, then it seems at least one batch went on sale this morning, and another one or two batches this evening but only those sitting all day hitting f5 raping the servers had a chance to get in.

Surely a slightly more controlled wider spread release, with some actually announcements sent out to sights would have given them far more time to gauge how many people would be buying it and therefore, how much more to spend on extra clusters to get other servers ready for launch. it was so low key and quiet that rather than everybody having the pre-order for 3 months like with other games, half the user base probably found out it was about to be released in the past few days so everyones raping the server and they don't have enough equipment for enough servers for launch, all fairly easily avoidable and a pretty big screw up.

I don't think anythings up at all. Guess they turned the forums off when they messed up the server launch and selling the game.

I'm the same really, based on how its been so far i wouldnt normally try it but i've been looking around this evening and can't find an alternative i havent already played / dont like the look of. I need a fantasy mmorpg fix! Doesnt look like much on the horizon really either :(.

EDIT
I was 1/2 way through downloading the DAoC client but gave up as i didnt want to ruin good memories lol.

Update on forums:

We’ve been waiting for the pre-orders to process through billing and it has been moving along but not fast enough. We’re almost done with this. Many of you will be getting notifications of this during this process. As soon as this is concluded we’ll process the accounts and open up the servers for the pre-orders. This will be done tonight; the game has been ready and waiting. Unfortunately we’re running behind schedule as far as opening up the extra sales which we hoped to do tonight as well. We’ll do this tomorrow as early as possible, likely sometime around noon GMT time, around the time of our first scheduled maintenance. At this time we will also process the problematic accounts which had 0 euro problems, no charges, no balance, but received a successful pre-order message. We are also looking into the few cases that have pre-ordered but have not received a confirmation email and we will resolve all these issues. Most of these problems were due to a combination of lag, multiple sessions, and multiple charge attempts. We want to thank you for your patience again, and we would like to let you know that we’re adding a couple more days to the free month of play making them 33 for everyone that pre-ordered and that will buy the game tomorrow. This is to make up for any bad experience with the account management, the lag and the delays you’ve had to face with purchasing. The traffic volume we’ve been experiencing has been unbelievably high because of the initial rush and was compounded by users hammering the system with multiple sessions. You should also know that we have been doing everything necessary to resolve all these issues as soon as possible. We’ll post again as soon as the server is open. The forums will return shortly as well.

On a side note, anyone played this: http://spellborn.acclaim.com/

i'm actually just completley bored of the fantasy thing tbh, mostly because they all feel so similar, orcs, dwarves, humans, why do they all have the same smegging things and can't do anything original, does my head in.

Lotro had similar types of races but at least had a fantastic story to go with it, more story than any other MMO i've played by miles and that made it stand out but its sooo freaking easy, most mmo's are tbh but its gotten stupidly easy of late.

But I can't find much good to play, I just played through the Witcher through boredom as the demo had me cringing at how bad it seemed, which is a mistake as its a blooming good game. But i'm done with that aswell now :(

for something original/different I'd kill for a superbly done startrek online, or the stargate one, IF they were good but you get the feeling both will be turdballs.

Dow2 is a big pile of uber easy boring unoriginal crap aswell. Might try and buy Darkfall tomorrow, I'm sure I can play it for a couple of weeks at least.

Looks like if you got the pre-order or buy tomorrow you'll get a few extra days aswell.

Just a bit paranoid that even by tomorrow afternoon there will be plenty of much higher powered people looking to gank the second wave of newbies to the game, though it could be funny.

Don't, for your own sake :p

LOL that bad is it?

Looks like im resigned to Darkfall then, hope it even slightly plays like the website plays. Info is a little thin on the ground though! Gotta hope im one of the lucky few who even manage to buy the game.

Roll on jumpgate. Im really loving LOTRO at the mo, only been about 5 weeks so im in no hurry. Just as well really as this is not an impressive launch.

Quite pretty, but not a lot else going for it. No bank, no auction house, very sterile world, and the first half dozen quests I did were :

Deliver party invitations
Deliver booze
Deliver booze in a strict time limit
Deliver meat..

You get the idea :) has a weird rotating skill tumbler thing that looks clever at first glance but is really just an annoying way of restricting which skills you can use. Stuck with it for about 6 or 7 hours play in the hope that it would get better, but nope :)
