Dashcams. Who uses them?

I decided on a 0801 after quite a bit of research, although maybe lacking some of the refinements of the 0803, it does appear to be a reliable workhorse. Once I'd decided on the 0801 I than had to find one from a decent seller, for a good price - I went for this one:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LAZEC8K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Good build quality, and excellent performance. I've managed to get a neat, discrete, installation - took my wife 3 weeks to notice I'd installed it :)

How did you install it out of interest?

I've got it tucked in behind the mirror, with the cable taped to the stem (right word?) of the mirror, then I've tucked the cable into the trim around the windscreen. I bought an extender for my cigarette lighter socket, and managed to tuck almost all cables out of sight. The only cable you can see (if you really look) is the one leading from the cigarette lighter socket.

Even from outside the vehicle it's hard to spot, very pleased with my £38 outlay :)

yup the cable that came with the 0801 was more than enough.
Came behind the rear view mirror, black electrician tape over the white writing and the LED on the cam.

Cable goes up the mirror stem, into the head lining, around the windscreen, down the right hand side of the dash then under the steering column and into the lighter socket.

And the 0801 records on power up and what, deletes the oldest file when full?

You select the length of the "clips", mines set to 5 minutes, and once your memory card is full it just writes over the oldest clips. I've got a 16gb card in mine, gives about 4 hours recording at max quality.

Gumpy321 you not thinking about the latest corvette with valet mode? They are releasing an update as its illegal to record audio of someone else driving your car apparently in some states.

I work for an automotive OEM, and we actually had a discussion about this exact thing a couple of months ago.
There are 2 ways this could be implemented:
1) basic video recording using the parking camera systems we already supply and some overlay to show vehicle position, speed, time, indicator status, etc.
2) Full-on black box recorder

The response from the sales team was that option 1 wouldn't be cost effective as not many people would tick that box as an option. They believed they could sell option 2 to the manufacturers, but you then run into issues with approval (Some sort of Thatchem certification would be required) and then you have the tricky issue of getting the public to understand that recording all their driving is for their benefit.

As some insurers are now starting to give discounts for having certain dashcams I can see that at some point it will come, just there are too many issues to overcome at the moment.
Personally I think the tipping point is going to be when autonomous cars arrive on the scene as I would think the black box solution would be required so that in the event of a crash the state of the vehicle at the time of the crash can be investigated.

Bought a G1W off that auction site and ended up with a crap version that does AVI not mkv. Sound is horrific also (not that I'd have it on)

Seems a bit of a lottery in getting a decent one. Tempted with the mini801 though

no lottery with the 0803 off the link in techmoans video..

I caught an absolute suicidal overtake in front of me this afternoon coming back from Hereford. Got to the stage now though I can't be arsed to edit and upload it.
I've got about three days of normal use before it overwrites it if I change my mind. :D

Finally got some pics of my Blackvue installation.

In the box ready to go:

Thats what I was after, something hidden away, and not messy. Power from overhead lights circuit and high quality recording :D Cable enters the trim through the existing hole for the powered mirror. Seems to work really well, and the little adhesive clips that come with the blackvue make the cable management easy. Nice little touch :)

Looks good. How did you power it off the lights circuit? Is that possible with the 0801?

My mirror's not powered but the windscreen wiper rain sensor is already behind the rear view mirror and that obviously has a power supply that's only on when the ignition is on. Would be much easier and tidier than running it down pillars and into the cig lighter!

Considering getting a second camera to record rear-facing, does anybody have experience of how well these 0801/0803 cameras work through a factory tinted rear window?
I've had my blackvue DR400 front-facing for a couple of years now and thankfully haven't had to use it, but had a near miss in the daily traffic out of work recently where someone behind me narrowly avoided planting her mini into my car because she was looking at her phone. Seeing how cheap things like the 0803 are now and how potentially useful it could be in a situation like that (had she have actually hit me) it would be a worthwhile investment surely.
