Dashcams. Who uses them?

a colleague of mine has a dash cam fitted and his following experience has now made me think of getting one

he owns a jag and had around 4 cameras fitted in it, it is his pride and joy. took it for its MOT and service this week to then check the footage after the work was carried out.

he has footage of the 2 mechanics doing 130 up the a38 absolutely caning his car. I couldn't help but laugh as he is the safest driver i have ever met!

thought i would share the story

the two men have now been fired

If they only got fired then I would say they got off pretty lightly. 130mph is instant license ban territory. Did the owner not take it up with the authorities?

You may be able to move the fuse for the current cig lighter to a switched live position.

I know someone who did this (or at least tried) and the VAG-CANBUS system went mental!

Using a 'Piggyback' on the Rear Wash/Wipe fuse (only live when the ignition is on) is what Im looking at (as someone on Briskoda has done)... with an aux lighter socket hidden under the Dash, and the power run up/behind the A pillar trim and tucked into the headlining (there's a gap)... it's not permanent either so can be moved easily to a new vehicle, and leave no trace in my current one for re-sale/trade-in value! :)

Can anyone tell me if it is vital to get the wide-angle lens on the Mobius for dash-cam usage?

There seems to be a difference in the price, and little information on if it is better suited..

I cannot say it is vital but I have the wide angle one and it's very good. I understand this is not helpful. I think it was only a couple of quid more from memory? You can use software to disable the wide view I think as well so makes sense to get it. About 80p more on JooVuu for wide.

I don't know why you wouldn't use a wider angle lens, it just captures more of the area ahead.

I'm honestly stunned at this beautiful quality. Wow! I park in the street so a solution without a screen would be best, which is why the de-cased mobius with camera lens extension attracts me, but I also have the issue of a permanent live which destroys the ability to install and forget it even exists. I could just build a circuit that regulates power based on the ignition state... hmm.

Guys with 0801 and 0803 cameras, just curious as to what software you are using with the camera to view files and convert them for youtube etc? I have registrator viewer and use that fine, the playback quality seems decent. But any of the converters I've tried to make the videos youtube friendly or compress them to a smaller size absolutely ruin the video quality.

Got mine last night, tested it on the way to work today, didnt install it properly though due to time. Got it stuck in the correct place now, quality seems great.
Just got to get a live to it from the overhead lights to make it nice and tidy :D

Really glad I went for this over a cheapy. Although, I am considering a cheapy for the back window :)

Had my first "capture" today with the new E-Prance.
Probably what is the worst bit of driving I've seen in quite a number of years.
Not so much affecting me, just the amount of times she positioned herself incorrectly and carved up other road users.
TOTALLY oblivious to the rules of the road and of any other road user on it..

Now all I have to do is work out a way of re-installing the video editing software I've got... on a drive that's full. :o

I use a GoPro in mine everyday, granted it not as tidy a solution as a purpose made unit.
However with Three cars plus the bikes it is very convenient to swap depending what I'm using from day to day.

I Started using it As a direct result of an incident that happened a few years back, when some hard evidence would have saved me a lot of money and inconvenience.

I don't use it to bother the Police with trivial issues, it is purely for if something unexpected happens that damages me or my property.
Every evening the card gets erased ready for the next day.

The week before last I was driving along when a car coming the opposite direction turned in front of me into a junction. Max braking slowed me to about 15mph resulting in quite a gentle collision, no airbags or anything. The woman apologised at the scene, admitted full liability, swapped details etc. Easy peasy? A couple of days later I get a call from the insurance company to say she was disputing liability.

I only had to mention that I had dashcam footage and the dispute was dropped. They still haven't asked for it. I still have it in case they do!

My cheap Chinese eBay special has been playing up for a while now and having just reaped the benefits of a dashcam, I'm keen to replace it. Does anyone have the Transcend Drivepro 200? I'm considering one against the Eprance 0803.
