Dashcams!

where did you get your git1 from if you don't mind me asking? and how did you mount it in the car?

You will need a couple of things.

I will need the Git 1, and a bracket. Links below, and also a 3M mount with just the screw.

There is 1 catch however, your rear window need to have around 45 degree slope as that is the maximum tilt of the 3M mount ball joint. So total you get a 90 degree for the dash cam to be straight down vertically. That means for most hatchback where the rear window goes straight down would be no good, it certainly would not work in my Yaris. Luckily my C30's rear window has almost exactly 45 degree slope ! I hadn’t thought of this until I got the mount. Else you might have to get a different mount, which I am sure they do one, as these things are made for mounting outside cars and all sorts.

What's everyone's opinion on the G1W-CB? Some good reviews online for it

I got one of these after reading the reviews, and don't have any major complaints, the quality is good enough to see what's going on clearly - numberplates can be a bit difficult to read unless they're quite close and straight on (and the glare/reflections make it virtually impossible at night). There's a bit of glare from headlights at night, but that may be more due to my windscreen being covered in scratches :p

I think the one criticism I have (for the price) is that it takes 3 mins for the screen to switch off while you're driving, which can be a bit distracting if it's visible from the driver's seat, but if you have it tucked behind the mirror then it's not really an issue.

If I'd paid more then I'd be expecting a bit better video quality, but for £45 I can't really moan! :p

Why do you guys feel the need to have dedicated dash cams?

I don't need my phone when I'm driving so I use an iPhone 6, £2 app and £3 screen mount; have done for the last 3 years without issue.

This admittedly doesn't cover my rear perspective but works perfect other than that!

Because you can guarantee the one time you forget to set your phone up is the time someone drives into you ;)

I don't understand the fascination with these comparatively large dashcams with huge ugly suction mounts like that. Do you not just want something really discrete and inconspicuous? That's why I like the 080x series.

Fail to see the point in having a screen at all tbh, other than initial setup (which if you hide the camera behind the mirror you can't see the screen anyway).

The purpose of the camera is fit and forget unless you crash?

Using an action cam as a dedicated dashcam is stupid, something like a Mini 0806 can be tucked away neatly. I don't know why people are buying these huge cameras as I don't see an improvement in features or image quality?

My reasoning for not using the 08xx series are

1 – Reliability, even in this thread alone there are a few users whose unit were faulty, look at Amazon have the same, look on YouTube, one of the main reviewer's unit turned up DOA. This alone put me off totally.

2 – The screen is good to adjust angle and quick review when you need it. Sure it is not necessary but same as a dashcam isn't necessary, we've been driving for 100 years without it and the human race survived ! It's a nice to have.

3 – These action cam has a dash cam mode, the screen goes off after (30 seconds, 1 min or 3), it splits the video in 2 mins, 5 mins etc, it can record with or without sound, it auto powers down, it acts just like a dash cam would, and they are half the size. And that is not "huge", yes it is bigger than the 08xx but huge is an exaggeration.

Excluding this reply I have a total of 3 posts in this thread.

I'd you think that's 'often' in a 910 post thread then I am not sure how to reply to that :p

Generally your responses are just negative towards the subject. So, again, why even post? :p

I think you need some perspective, in this threads entire history I've posted a couple of times today and once on another occasion. The rest of my now rapidly increasing post count in this thread is addressing your bizarre claim that I post in this thread 'so often' :p

One more reply and I'll have posted more here about you thinking I always post here than I've actually posted here about dashcams :D

Thank you for your reply :)

What's it like when on the windscreen? I want something that is discrete.
I might just go ahead and get one

The git1 isn't that big.

That looks completely stupid.

I agree, it should be a crime to park your BMW with the wheel off center like that.. ;)

Although I am not a fan of any stick on stuff in the car normally, that includes parrot car kits, phone holders, etc..

If I ever get a cam, I will 3D Print a stealth surround that completely hides it, I can't do any worse a job than BMW with their rain-sensor carbunkle..
