Dashcams!

After spending a week being terrified by the UK DashCam youtube channel (I just couldn't stop looking) and seeing several hundred clips it starts to become clear that people are idiots who can't use a junction (or roundabout) to save their life or are extremely impatient regarding overtaking.

I've broken down what type of vehicle appears on most dashcam vids into 4 main categories and 1 minor one-

1. MPV's
2. Small cars (Fiesta/Golf/A3 or smaller)
3. White Vans
4. People not seeing bike/motorbikes
5. "Random"

but what I don't see much of (very rare) is sports cars. I was surprised to see that 95% of the dashcam footage I watched is just "normal" cars being driven by absolute morons with zero ability or common sense rather than, as I expected, "sporty" cars going way too fast and getting it wrong. I'm sure it's just down to the sheer number of "normal" cars vs "sports" cars on the road but next time you see a compilation video, see how accurate my list above is.

I actually think that the majority that own sports cars, do seem to be better drivers, I am not saying all of them, but certainly quite a high number

This makes sense though, you don't generally randomly buy a sports car - you do so because you've got at least a passing interest in driving.

people with money do so because - status symbol.

pretty young blonde in a E89 Z4 yesterday crawling along in right lane must have been doing her make up or something because she slowly drifted into the middle of the 2 lanes before the sound of multiple horns made her correct course into the lane she was in. where she was undertaken by multiple cars yet stayed in that lane for the following 2 miles.

i doubt she has any interest in driving, just looking good. sunglasses on in the rain, etc.

Polarised sunglasses in the rain can be useful and actually help you see further than without due to the reduced glare/reflections :p

Not that it was her intent... but a good pair of polarised lenses are beneficial even when the sun's hiding ;)

Indeed. I often have mine on when it's overcast or spitting as there is usually quite a bit of glare still and the polarised lenses remove it without making it impossible to see.

My Blackvue has decided to stop auto recording and working intermittently, still powered on etc. First time I've had issues since owning the car in march, hoping it's just the SD card!

Avoid RAC installers like the plague bud. They use an independant installer who by the sounds of it dont know what their doing half the time.

Theres also conditions on where they can do the installatuon, it has to be a drive or somewhere private. They will refuse to install if its on the road lol

Its prob still cheaper for you to go to a local car electrics installer

Yeah, the low light quality just wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

I still have it as my Dashcam at the moment, it's still a good device, but I guess Techmoan had me hoping it was amazing and it isn't quite that good.

Happy to take suggestions on what could be better at under £100...

I had an issue with my blackvue when it had been out of the car for a few months, and they just replaced it :)
Send them an e-mail!

No question about it - Thinkware F770.

If your serious about the Blackvue remember it doesn't have builtin voltmeter functionality to monitor the battery levels - its an additional unit that has to be purchased.

Feature wise its nowhere near as rich as the thinkware (but then again, I do switch all that pants off lol)

I have always wondered this. Because my camera has a capacitor and not a battery, if I don't use the car for about 3-4 days it tends to lose the date and time (reset to 2000). I have to set it every time and it's a faff.

My question is, legally and for insurance purposes do the time and date have to be correct?
