Dashcams!

So I can see a number of places selling the hard wire kit.

Only problem is looking at the picture, I have had about ten cheap phone charges that use that cheapo style connector and they never last more than a few weeks!

Really, I don't think I have ever had a micro or mini USB break on me. Will you be unplugging and removing the cam regularly? If not the connector shouldn't be an issue.

The USB cable plugs into the base, you never need to ever disconnect it once plugged in as the dashcam slides into the base.

The 080x series require 5v and 1 amp to power, the bundled charger outputs 5v with 2 amps though but that doesn't matter much as long as it's at least 1A.

Edit*
Quick gif showing the difference the CPL filter makes, this is me just rotating it in place.

Picked up one of the 0806's for my Mom, which just arrived from Amazon. In the manual it says all you need to do is align the white dot on the filter with the dot at the top of the magnet on the camera itself, not sure if that will always be the case or if will vary from filter to filter.

Not bought a CPL filter yet to test as I want to see if there's any dash reflection first.

I've found a couple of bugs/quirks.

When you set the time it's always going to show the wrong time until GPS is locked and the internal clock sets itself, you can see the clock change in recorded video as GPS locks and the time changes. This poses the question, why is there an option to change the time and date if it's getting it via GPS anyway?

Enabling the image rotate mode for when you want to use the 0806 the other way round, and then going to select HDR resolution, the image flips back right side up on the display but records at the correct orientation.

21:9 mode (2560x1080) shows the best picture quality at 18Mbps. 1080P is around 12Mbps. At 21:9 resolution, the display says I should get 3hrs 50mins of footage on a 32GB card. I will wait until 128GB cards are even cheaper and use one of those in time.

Upthread it was mentioned that a police officer deleted some files from the dashcam. I believe the file system on these devices is ExFAT or FAT64 which means that files can be easily undeleted using the appropriate utilities.

Dash cam

Today I was speaking to someone and they suggested I should get a dash cam. I have only been on the road a month or two but I really cannot see the point?

I have a 1.4 polo that couldn't film anything interesting if it tried, it doesn't go fast enough.

So fellow motorists, why?

It's not so much about recording your own "interesting" driving lol... it's more about protecting yourself in the event of an incident and they're relatively cheap compared to how much you'd lose in your excess, let alone other associated costs with an accident (even if you're not to blame.

If I had a dashcam when a white van swapped lanes abruptly and drove into me while I was freely moving... it would have been a very easy claim.

As it turned out, no witnesses stopped, the police didn't attend scene and the insurance company wouldn't even fight for me... I ended up getting the blame for a non-fault accident, despite having two witnesses in the car that they wouldn't consider and doing all their research for them & lost out a large excess along with subsequently increased insurance premiums.

He even admitted fault at the side of the road & apologised... it was only when the claim came through that I knew any different.

A dash cam would have avoided that entirely.

So... get a dash cam... simply because there are lying ***** out there who will screw you over to protect their mistakes at the drop of a hat.

/yeah... i'm still a bit bitter about that dude... wrote off a rather rare Subaru Impreza Type RA-RR that had just JUST finished it's 2,000 mile run in after an expensive rebuild.

I've had a look through that thread and everyone seems to be going for the 806. Looks pretty cool and not badly priced either.

I work at Halfords so can get discount through there, is there any you would recommend? They all look the same to me. Unless there is one better and cheaper outside of there?

On my 805, in the time date settings.. the very first digit can be changed to move hourly increments forward and back so it shows the correct time depending on GMT , BST etc.
