Dashcams!

Just bought my self an 0806 after reading the last few pages of this thread.
I've been thinking about adding a delay timer to the the power off, possibly something like this (hope the links ok)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400804905276?clk_rvr_id=872848800758&rmvSB=true

Wondering if anyone has done the same and has any tips etc - I'm sure I could muddle my way through it eventually but it's always nice when someone who knows what they are doing can help lol

There are already options in the menu for it to do this automatically... and it has a built in battery.

There is also a motion sensor / parking mode that'll record any movement or bumps while you're parked from the battery power.

Butttt... I have to admit, I like that timer relay switch idea :D

Yeah I saw the parking mode thing but it can be a bit hit and miss from what I read.
I've been looking for voltage cut off switches etc which seem to more what I'm looking for.
You can get a Lukas lk-290 that will cut the supply off at 12.4v but you can only seem to get hold of them from South Korea.
This looks like another option

You can obviously buy other ones but you really want it to cut off from 12.4v+ otherwise you'll drain your battery too much.

The 1080P HDR mode works surprisingly well in dusk/night time conditions. Where highlights would be overly blown out in normal mode, with HDR they're not and signs are more legible. Just a shame it's 30fps only of course but at least the quality is good.

I'm undecided between 1920x1080-HDR and 2560x1080 now, the latter is 24Mbit and 1080 is a shade over 10Mbit, so the 2560 res is a little more detailed, but the HDR offsets that with a more clearer picture as darkness falls. The HDR resolution file is also half the size of the 2560 one (250MB vs a little over 500MB for 3mins per file), so more recording time available.

I wish someone would create a firmware with the changes in the custom one mentioned already, and with the addition of a day/night setting whereby as night hits, you can tell it to use one resolution, and daytime another.

I'll retry without using the CPL at night and apply -1EV to offset the blown highlights. The key is to be able to read signs and things and not worry about detail in dark areas so this may work out well, even during the day.

Have you/anyone asked the guy on the forum who created the 24mbit custom firmware?

At least he might be able to update the bitrate of the 1080p-HDR files to improve detail... you never know about the switching functionality, although that sounds more complicated, whereas the bitrate update may literally be changing the bitrate figures from 10mbit to 24mbit :D

I meant the recording of it, do you set it so it shows a lot of dash or not a lot?

Most tend to base their exposure off the dead-centre point in the shot.

So aim to have the mid-point of the video around top of road height / traffic height and you'll get the best exposures.

Some you can change the point they use to determine best exposure. Others you can change the default exposures to higher or lower, but that last one would be a mass-setting so you'd get best exposures at night/day/sunny/rainy/etc but maybe not at other times.

I haven't! Not a member there :(

Some interesting clips being acquired lately, This Audi driver...

^That quality was fine TBH, 1080P-HDR. I got 6 hours of footage that day too. I am happy with that at 14Mbps bitrate.

Odd behaviour with the 0806 yesterday.

When it reached full... it just switched itself off, it didn't continue recording and over-write the old files

Have only filled it once so far, will see if it does it again.

I've scanned the menus and can't see any reason why it might be doing this.

Not had the issue with sd card on mine! At least I don't think I have yet.

Like mine?

I use registration Viewer. It's pretty neat, download and set up the options how you like, points the file browser to your sd card and the software will group all session segments into "one" video and plot out the Map route, G data, stats etc - This is really cool.

You can then use the timeline right click option to set a start point and end point then right click and save only the segment between those points. KB shortcut is CTRL+HOME/END.

If you weren't talking to me then... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :D

Thanks

I did quote you, but it disappeared it seems

i'll download that mate, thanks

Well my 0806 lasted long... Worked for 1 journey.
Started the car up this morning and it's dead. Won't power on. Tried resetting it by holding the power button for 20 seconds etc.
All that comes on is a very very dim green LED screen won't boot up. Plug it into PC and I get device not recognised. Seems to be a common problem.
