Dawn of War II Beta Thread

The tense trying to hold on to a critical location for the time countdown has completely gone to be replaced by a stupid points system, talk about anticlimax. In fact I actually can't think of any area that the sequel is better other than graphics (and even that is debatable with a lack of blood, no persistent bodies and far less unique combat animations)

what have they done

Who the hell wants a 40k game with tiny battles? defeats the whole object of the franchise. I find myself just making units run about constantly worrying they are going to die because it will no doubt take me another 10 minutes before i can get a another squad. Also, i havent played dawn of war in a while but the graphics don't seem to have improved much . I thought the graphics would be fps quality seen as the unit cap is so rubbishly small.

Gone backwards :(

Really dissapointed.

The squads are small, but you can have plenty of squads. I've had some really big battles myself.

Yes you do have to worry about them dieing, so you have to manage your units better. You can't just send them in and leave them to it. Keep them in cover, use cannon fodder so you have time for squads to deploy, etc. I don't think graphics are that bad, definitely an improvement on DoW.

It's not like DoW really, but I still find it quite an enjoyable game :) Just give it a chance as it is a different game!

Yeh i have only played a few games and should give it more of a chance. However i am thinking of not buying simply because of the scale of the unit caps and squad sizes. Also why are there LESS unit options? Its a sequel after all.

God knows what relic were on about when they said they couldnt do tyranids justice with the old DOW and then introduce the biggest numerical horde army into a game about small scale tactical battles . They would have been better in the original:o

The graphics arent bad, true, but with such a small scale I was expecting better.

The whole game stinks of being watered down and prepped for a 360 release (which I have heard is well on the cards).

Give the 40K franchise to creative assembly I say and let them re-write the definition of epic.

If only Relic had improved on The Dark Crusade they would have been on to a winner.

I was a bit disappointed with the squad size, I think they should up it to at least 5 (for space marines). I find that as soon as I lose a member I will take it back to the stronghold to replenish so they don't get wiped out in a battle. Hopefully they will listen to feedback.

I was wondering if they have included everything for each of the races in the beta? I've only played Space Marines, but there are plenty of empty slots on the menu, which might suggest they haven't included everything in the beta to avoid spoiling it. But that might just be me being hopeful :p

After playing this a few times, I won't be ordering the full version. I loved DOW some of the addons were not so good, but having lots of armies to choose from and various tactics to beat each army was great.

I loved massive battles for example on "into the breach" amassing an army then sending it through the small gap to meet the enemy and the massive battle ensuing, orb striking for the win.

This feels slow and un exciting, I never feel as though im enjoying myself at all if im honest. For me in RTS base building is a must, yes have capture points instead of mining or collecting ore etc. But base building must be there, it's a tactical part of the game and if someone wants to turtle up let them turtle.

Dissapointed with this, I really am.

I'm undecided myself. I love a good WH40K story, and if they've done a good job it'll keep me interested throughout the single player campaign.

The multiplayer just makes me want to load up DoW 1 though :(

I don't know if you'll get a great story, frankly. The PC Gamer UK review stated that there is a lot of repetitive filler missions between actual 'story' ones. And of course, you can only play as Space Marines.

You do get big battles. The only problem is, most people dont pull their troops out in time. If you keep losing your squads you are never going to build up a big army.

Me and Andy had a game last night where the enemy Ork army was huge simply because he didnt lose his squads (****** kept running away :D)

Yea, I noticed its best to really take care of what you have. I am too used to not really caring if I lose a squad or two just because I can make more easy. In DOW2, you don't get much REQ to build squads, so its best to take care of what you have.

@ stellios, I am having the exact same issue on a samsung q210 laptop with nvidia 9200, 3gb ram and 2.26ghz c2d.
I get about 14-16fps with everything low. What is the spec of your laptop?

I am sure it is a bug because the engine looks very similar to COH and I get 70-100fps with the same settings. I can also play forged alliance and COD5 so something is up.
