DayZ - Standalone Thread

I think standalone will have success, not major success but a strong following. we've all watched dayz grow into somthing better and better with many faces (epoch, origins, 1942 etc etc) They are going to be taking it to a completly different level with standalone, its not just another Dayz mod. I do beleive they should have made a completly new map for standalone, chernarus is just too old and well known, its going to seem ok at first then get boring quick, as it'll feel like the old mod with new bits.

If they would have made a new map, maybe the largest yet with different weather in different areas then i think it would be more interesting to play for the people already knee deep in Dayz.

I hope its good enough to capture the attention of the hardcore fans for more than a month or two, but i think it might seem all too familiar on the chernarus map.

Can you imagine how long it would take to design + implement a map even close to the detail Chenarus has? I think it took literally years to design Chernarus as it is!

The amount of time to create a new map wouldn't have been viable. Imagine the amount of bugs in pre release that would need fixing, especially collision and then the bugs that would be waived for release.

Thats what Alpha and Beta are for....Do you really want to play Chernarus again...Why did they not use Taviana or Pantera or Namalsk or any other map that isn't the map we've all had to death...

It is going to keep some fans and attain some new ones, but i think people will just get bored quicker because its on an exsisting map and no amount of swamp addons are going to fix that.

EDIT : i know the devs are putting a lot of work into chernarus and that it looks amazing and the changes are massive, i do hope that i'm wrong and it feels like a new experiance.

You don't understand game development then, alpha and beta are just terms applied to a project of any scale. Alpha and Beta could be used for your local school children making a boardgame. It still depends on resources/time/money. Re testing a new map of that scale would probably be talking another year of development.

IMO the only map with longevity (in its' current form) is Chernarus because of the sheer variety of angles that you can get hit from when you're playing, in other maps like Tavi and Namalsk there's only a few ways to get to places and those ways to get there make you learn where an attack can come from, but on Chernarus there are so many different ways to get between places it is a lot harder to judge where people will come from, also in Chernarus + they are adding in a large amount of towns and rivers etc to give more variety to the map with even more ways to get around and explore.

Chernarus is, and probably always will be, my favourite map for DayZ and with good reason, I have had so much fun on that map it's unreal :D

what adds real depth is what is being added now.

crafting will add a lot of depth. removing the over powered snipers will.

devs have asked people about crafting ideas and there are some great suggestions. there is going to be many extras added which will take dayz forward.

Alpha and Beta are stages of development when testing every aspect of a games compatability and playability. your seening it as a Stage 1 and Stage 2 sort of thing we both know what i mean when talking about alpha and beta, the time when the game is opened to testing via either an enclosed group or the general public.

Look how many maps are out for Dayz, lots developed over long periods by either 1 person or a small group. I don't see the issue with it, you want to make a stand alone game ,dont put it on an old map, its counter to the point of stand alone, its not alone if weve already played it. I dont see the issue behind releasing a new map and letting the community work out the kinks, that is exactly what alpha and beta testing achieves.

If i got a game like Cod, and then the next cod had all the same maps but with little changes, id get bored of it a lot faster because ive already done it. and people are leaving it because of the repetitivness.

In my opinion i'd prefer a new experiance on a new game and to achieve that it needs a new map, maybe something similar but new, and i hope they release more maps for the stand alone because i think with just chernarus for the first 6 months, i'm going to be sat their thinking "why dident i just play the mod i'd already payed for, and save myself the money"

Looks like maybe some news tomorrow if this is to be believed, there are several other similar comments from him on posted on reddit.

LOL gratz. Surely it cant be that far away. Without getting too down on War Z (and who needs to really) I would like to see Day Z benefit from the bump in interest World War Z is inevitably going to produce in zombie games.

nothing warz should be even thought of lol or related.

e3 is where youll find out everything you want to know about this game 11th june - 13th.

" E3 really throws a spanner in the works for us, I doubt we're going to be able to set a date before E3 itself.

But todays milestone is a huge one, one that we have been awaiting since November last year. It means our base architecture is finished "

Even if I said "release the game" right now, there is a bunch of commercial crap that has to happen - so keep that in mind too. That's what makes a release date a bit mysterious. However, it's much easier for us to do the release via steam and this commercial stuff is essentially all done there.

There's still no release date but we've reached that climactic inevitability moment, where it's on the downhill.

june 11th -13th e3 :) cant wait now.
