DC2 vs. RX8

That was exactly my point when I said it in response to Gibbo talking about his friends RX8 failing so hard to keep up.

A better driver will usually be faster regardless of the car, unless there is a ridiculously large margin (ie. Nissan Micra 1.2 vs. M5).

I'd have the DC2 mainly because the fuel economy of the RX8 would annoy me greatly. Give me an RX8 that would do a genuine 30mpg and I'd certainly choose it over the older Honda.

DC2 is nice and practical, can seat 4 and has a fair sized boot

The boot is bigger than you'd expect, yes, but the back seats are useless, you have to be under 4 foot tall to be remotely comfortable in the back :p

Can quite happily sit on the motorway as well just ambling along.

I disagree with this, it really needs a 6th gear, ~70mph is at around 4k rpm

We should rename this thread to RX8 vs M3.

I would take the RX8 any day over an old 90's Honda. The RX8 (despite what all the DC2 fanboys say) is completely next generation in terms of design. Sitting in a Dc2 is so uninspiring compared to the RX8, with leather, heated seats, sat nav, Bose stereo (IIRC), etc. The RX8 is no slouch comparitively either.
Apart from the slightly better drive on a nice road, the only other thing that the DC2 beats the RX8 on is fuel consumption. They are a totally different drive with the DC2 being FWD and RX8 being RWD.
The only reasons I could ever see to buy a Dc2 over the RX8 (fuel consumption aside) is if you are a fanboy or want something really driver orientated and dont care about other aspects of the car.

Well its like I once went on a trackday in my very old 525i SE with 220,000 miles and was faster in the corners than a 911 C4S, Aston Martin V8 and a TVR. It was not because my car was faster, it was because I drove the life out of the 525i SE as I did not care if the car lived afterwards. In reality an old 525i SE is no match, I repeat NO MATCH for the above machinery, but they cared about their cars.

On another track day I went in the CSL, it absolutely destroyed everything else on track and I was taking it easy and my brakes were knackered. However a certain Neil in a DC2 was hanging on, why well because in traffic I was quite careful as unlike the old 525i SE I did not want to kill the CSL and crash into anything so took it careful and under braking well the whole car towards end of the day felt like wheels were gonna come off the disc got badly warped. So because of this a DC2 with a nutter behind the wheel was keeping up, once traffic cleared the CSL quite easily pulled away, but in traffic I was careful and under braking the car was weak.

So saying you kept with another car does not make your remapped Focus ST a better car its most likely the fact your car is FWD and is easier to push on harder and get on the power earlier. Then different drivers etc.

But having owned and driven Focus ST's and M3's, remapped or not an ST is crap in comparison to an M3 sorry.

It's always easier to follow than lead on a public road. The guy in front is doing all the blind corner checks, road surface checks. The guy behind doesn't need to do this anywhere near as much so he can take more risks.

That's all that "kept up" with means. The guy behind takes more risks.

Drivetrain aside I think the dc2 is one of the most fun cars you could ever drive... Especially in that price bracket. They are just a hoot!

The RX8 is getting compared to M3's, admittedly by either stupid people or people who are trying to wind others up. No one is stupid or obvious enough to compare a DC2 to an M3. Says a lot. They both undeniably have the sportiness factor how ever.

The RX8 is the most disappointing car I've driven in quite a long while. After reading all the reviews I expected something pretty decent but in reality the engine totally let it down. If it had a 2.0l turbo engine it would be a genuinely good car but that rotary thing is awful.

The RX8 exudes in the nature of the sporting elusiveness, for make benefit driving involvement!

You need to be pretty short sighted to consider the RX8 bad because of its engine, as this is one of its best features - but so many people do dismiss it, usually because they simply do not understand it (And because it doesn't "feel" fast).

Learn how to use the engine, and get off straight roads and onto some bendy roads and it'll all make sense. It's also beautifully smooth when driving normally.

Given your love the for RX8, how much you have tied up in the ST, how utterly cheap they are these days (and the fact this has caused you to ask us to spec you a cheapo car on numerous occasions) and the fact the RX8 remains a practical 4 door saloon it's rather odd why you dont own one, Mike.

You know why I don't own one. But it's no where near as practical as the ST.

This will likely change in the future, though.

You are 22 years old. When you are 45, you can bleat about the practicality issues of a 4 door saloon car. Life is for enjoying right now. Go and buy your RX8. It's got 4 doors!

They dont make them anymore and they are just going to get older. Do it.

You can actually fit a reasonable size person in the back too, I was in the back of a PZ edition a couple of years ago and it wasn't really particularly uncomfortable.

I'm 23, with a baby due in the next few weeks.

Once I've settled after baby gets here, I'm going to buy Lauren a car she actually wants, then get rid of the ST and buy something I really want (most probably the RX8).

I understand I've hypothesised about so many different options on here, but its the RX8 I keep coming back to. :)
