DCS: A-10C Warthog (first screens!)

The game looks awesome, but I've never been all that into sims - however I do love the A-10...

Guessing the learning curve is pretty steep but I'm willing to give it a try, how fun do you guys find it?

I might be considered a bit biased but personally it's the most 'fun' game I've had.

But I've always been a study sim nut, and the idea of spending months learning is actually a positive for me (I don't enjoy 'easy' games like FPSs for more than a couple of weeks).

If the thought of having to read through a 700 page manual and practice/train for months in order to 'master' the sim doesn't appeal, then it may not be for you.

Of course that said, if you have no interest in realism and just want to fly and blow stuff up, you could probably learn the things you need to in a couple of weeks, depending how much gaming time you have.

On the other hand, I've been flying study sims since the days of the amiga 500, and I'm still learning today. It all depends how 'deep' you want to go.

I purchased this back in the beta, had a few plays with it (love in depth sims)
and what I have seen so far show me it looks great - ah it makes me remember the days of SU27 Flanker and then the 1.5 upgrade for those who played it back then (anyone else here used to frequent the oclub?)

however 2 problems arose over the last year:

1 - newborn children steal all available time!
2 - failed video card means no home pc - laptop only until I get around to replacing the card or replace the whole pc

Hmmm - one day I will get to it :)

The training missions combined with running the Georgian spring mission are enough to get you up and flying pretty quickly. There's a ton of user made missions that start you in the sky and plenty that are geared towards live fire training if you want to blow stuff up quickly.

Between Mavericks and guns you can cause some pretty heavy damage without having to learn even a fraction of the systems.

The learning curve is as steep as you want it to be.

Thanks for the reply mate. I have a lot of gaming time, have a pretty slack Uni course which is only 3 days a week. I think with a game like this learning to do everything would be far better in the long run, can see myself getting really into it as well.

Do you know of anywhere to download a demo?

First Aircraft in the DCS Flying Legends series, the Mustang.

The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics will release their next Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) aircraft in 2012: the legendary P-51D Mustang. The Mustang was among the best and most well-known fighters used by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Possessing excellent range and manoeuvrability, the P-51 operated primarily as a long-range escort fighter and also as a ground attack fighter-bomber with bombs, rockets, and machine guns. The Mustang served in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later fought in the Korean War.

The DCS: P-51D Mustang will be modelled at the same exacting detail as the existing Ka-50 Black Shark and A-10C Warthog Digital Combat Simulation (DCS) aircraft and it will be online compatible with them. Based on many years of restoring, flying and maintaining Mustangs, The Fighter Collection brings its unique ability to portray this aircraft in its full glory.

The P-51D will be the first aircraft in the Flying Legends series that focuses on historical aircraft that have set benchmarks in combat aviation. This series of simulations demonstrates the broad scope of DCS simulation environment and its ability to introduce aircraft from all eras into a common simulation environment. While the P-51D started as an internal technology demonstration, it has evolved into an independent product that adds an all new dimension to the DCS universe. The development of the P-51D and other Flying Legends series aircraft definitely does not preclude the continued development of modern aircraft.

More details of DCS: P-51D Mustang will be made available closer to product release later this year.

The flight modelling for the Mustang should put all IL2 efforts to shame, but... what place does WW2 plane has in the world of 21century conflict in Southern Russia that is the only map in DCS?
FLight modelling may well be worth the price of admission alone, but...

I'm with your Borsch - like you I find the DCS flight modelling the best in a game I've ever seen - BUT I agree - what place does the WW2 plane have in the game ??? just seems an odd choice

Why does it have to have a reason? This is a simulator series, if they want to bring in a classic aircraft without having to tie in a whole new terrain, you should know they've used the current one for a very long time and it's only soon that we get a new one. I don't assume to know for a fact a10s didn't operate in that area, nor having ka50s work in tandem with them.

It's odd people care that much, just stop thinking about where or when it takes place, play it, with your friends, have some dog fights, have fun.

Hell, when you can go to Nellis AFB pretend you're doing stunts/memorial flight if it has to have a "place".

how will it cope against SAMs then ??

will it have flares/chaff ?

Who said you have to go up against current technology?

Edit: The way I see it, as the official FAQ notes is it was done as a project and now they want to import it, who knows in a decade we might have everything from bi-planes to F22s/eurofighters/f35 and future/experimental aircraft, I'm totally not going to snub my nose at that. The more we have to play with with such depth and simulation the better I say and I'd rather have it all with one company who knows what they're doing with cross aircraft compatibility/coop.

are we getting full ground elements based on WWII then ? I hadn't realised that -so WWII tanks, AA etc etc ? :)

I'm going from what I read, no that isn't happening so far.

Or you're being sarcastic to which I reply; I don't care really, just place some bunkers, aaa with low skills, trucks, infantry, have a blast, strafe some train stations, I dunno!
