17-year-old girl dies from Nipple Piercing; Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Medical authorities in Vancouver Canada are investigating the death of a 17-year-old girl whose identity is being withheld, after initial indication that the girl fell victim to a fatal case of Toxic Shock Syndrome as a result of an unsanitary nipple piercing.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention, Toxic Shock Syndrome is caused mainly by toxins from bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus, typically found in the mucous membranes of the mouth and on the skin. The onset of the syndrome starts with sudden chills, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches and skin rashes.

Dr. Simon Avis stated that the girl had been admitted to a St. Johns hospital earlier in the week with complex medical problems. She died Thursday March 9, 2006. Although until a complete microbiological examination is made, the exact cause of death cannot be confirmed, all suspicion puts to the fact that the nipple piercing is most likely cause of the systemic infection. Avis that the apparent toxic shock syndrome was caused by infection at the site of the piercing as determined from an anatomical autopsy already performed.

Avis said her death might be "an extreme example" of what can occur when people have lips, tongues, eyebrows, genitals and other body parts punctured in the name of fashion.

Think it is a extreme case though, but still bad.

The article slightly puts a spin on it, for all we know she might have gone to a rubbish peircing place, or she might have even got one of her friends to do it. Thats the thing with news articles, you never hear the full story.

Its just as likely that she got it from leaving a tampon in too long but we all know how the media would prefer to scare everyone, so that possibility never even gets mentioned

Either way the human body wasn't designed to be pierced by sharp objects, painful or not.

Fatiain and Brynn are right you'll never hear the full story. Things like this happen through bad piercers and poor after care. Blood poisoning is caused by an infection thats been ignored getting into the blood. This could have been avoided, it may be because the law in America usually states you must be 21 and show id to get pierced leading to younger people going to cowboys and friends.

no offense to you or brynn but it both sounds like your trying to get out of the fact piercings are perfectly safe and its nothing to do with body mods, which quite frankly we all know is garbage. the body wasnt meant to be modded, and this could well be the case of her dying.

Nope, I disagree. Healing and immune response is exactly that, a response to a wound however small it may be.
I originally said the human body wasn't designed to be pierced by sharp objects. This I believe is proven through the fact that you get pains when the body is pierced by sharp objects

Edit: That's why people die when they get stabbed. It's not a nice example, but an example none the less

Otherwise people would heal from a stab wound or even a 3 inch slash.

there not pefectly safe and you know full well there not, when you walk into a tattooist, or a piercer, they hold no responsibilitys when you step out of the parlour.

Or she could have just been really stupid. I'm not going to argue with you anymore, you obviously have made up your mind that piercings are the route of all evil and nothing will change your mind.
If you did some proper research on piercings i'd take your arguement seriously.

piercings arent the route of all evil, you know me blackstar and you know what my girlfriend has on her body, and as i say yes piercings are fine if you look after them, im planning on getting piercings, but in some cases no matter how you look after them or how you careful you are things can happen..

People do recover from large wounds. With medical intervention. My dad managed to survive being being shot by a Korean shotgun. (fortunately or you wouldn't have to put up with my spam)
