Reading over that article it mentions 'unsanitary nipple piercing' which could be taken to mean she wasn't lookig after it. It's unfortunate that things like this happen. This is the exact reason my dad blew his top when i got my lip pierced his arguement was that his friend's daughter was paralised after a lip piercing due to blood poisoning. Its a rare thing to happen thank god.

does'nt have to be some sort of infection to get toxic shock syndrome, can't the dioxins in nappies, tampons etc cause it in extreme cases

I agree with you that you can recover from pierced projectiles and knives and whatever that makes a large wound, however without medical intervention, for a large wound, you're knackers aren't you?
But when I say the human body wasn't designed to accept piercings it goes to say naturally, without medical treatment.

I have no issues with piercings - I dont think its the root of all evil - I just think on men it makes them look like a retard and on Women when OTT its ugly

No, it's caused by a toxin from the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Not anything else

Keeping a wound clean can do a lot to help, out in Korea, the Americans used to use Coke to clean wounds out in the field before they could seek medical attention (it worked very well too)

i think piercings are amazingly cool, and tattoos im all in for body mods love em to bits, heck soon as i get the cash my body is getting inked feet to head, and the odd piercing.

but i think this is just showing we should be careful of caring for the wound. yeh blackstar i do understand where you coming from, there not the route of all evil, there the route of being unique

and im all for em, but when someone dies from one makes me slightly werey? (sp?)

I didn't get any of mine for other people i know a lot of people dislike them or can be offended by them. I respect your oppinion though i don't share it.

DRZ- I have piercings and i can say that they make me happy i don't reguard them as self harm or as fashion really. I have them because i like the way they look and in some cases make me feel.

But you can get it thru tampons and suchlike, my mother nearly died from tampon related TSS, as Roberta said, a friend got it from a IUD - there are many daily things that can cause it

However it doesn't disaprove my original point of which we are disagreeing about that the human body isn't designed to accept piercings. It needs to be adapted. In all honesty, if you believe otherwise, go to the kitchen, stab yourself nice and deep, and let it bleed and don't do anything to the wound and carry on as normal

But you only get TSS off things 'inserted' that have S. aureus on them, if they're clean, you won't get TSS. That's what I was trying to say.

Small 'stabbings' can be worked around by the body, like piercings. Big, artery severing stabbings cannot, like this knife in my chest. It stings a bit.....
