Death of movie theatres (cinemas)

I'm going to the Odeon on June 20th to watch the Ghost concert move Rite Here Rite Now, the time before that was the Slayer concert movie about 4 years ago and then before that Star Wars something or other in 2015.
Before that it was Godzilla back in the 90s.

I understand it perfectly, you just made a number of assumptions to explain how it failed when it didn't.

There was never any experiment that was looking to replace the theatrical release window in the long term. Also, there was never any need to mention "exclusively in cinemas" for big trailers before that, as that was obvious.

Thats absolute BS and you know it - regardless you still havent explained what experiment you were referring to?

No, that's not what we're talking about, you've decided to try and move the goalposts to fit what was a very poor initial post from yourself.

The streaming experiment hasn't failed as of yet, it had a spike during covid and is now in a natural decline from that. It was never intended to completely replace the first phase of theatrical release, just a short-term stopgap when people couldn't or didn't want to go to the cinema because of Covid.

Here's the data on Disney+ worldwide subscriber count for the past 4 years:

Don't feed the troll

Wife and I used to go regularly, once every three or four weeks. Now we don't bother, think the last movie we watched was one of the Halloween reboots.
Numerous reasons - the cost even for afternoon midweek screenings, especially if you factor in some refreshments. Lack of comfort, poor quality seating, sticky floor.
Poor behaviours of other customers.
And frankly there's just not much that original or "must see" that can't wait for the Blu-ray/4K disc and our 65" screen from the comfort of our Laz-y-Boy.

...and yet how many posts are about people wanting to avoid being in the presence of others and preferring to watch films on their own at home..

Its not that people don't want to be around others due to social awkwardness, its mostly that people don't want to be around bad mannered idiots who can ruin the (very expensive) experience for everyone else with their bad behaviour - those are two vastly different reasons to want to watch something away from people.

and don't forget the money.
The film I'm going to see is costing £20 plus a 15 mile drive, I'll take my own sweets.

I love going to the cinema, but I admit, we have a great one and it's within walking distance. When it's not raining my wife and I are happy to take a walk over and enjoy the experience.

We are lucky in that it's a Cineworld, we have Unlimited membership, and it's a fairly new cinema in very nice condition. The staff are always friendly, noticeably so, which just adds to the feel good factor.

I just simply wouldn't feel the same watching something on a large screen TV.

it's mainly annoying people that would stop me going now, lots of the reasons already posted
also, have they turned up the volume. was at IMAX recently and the volume was at ear bending levels. maybe i'm just getting old :)
it would be a shame to see them go completely but if sales don't keep up more could close.
the red letter media piece was obviously the USA experience, but have people noticed cinemas closing near them (here in the UK)?

we go to the cinema to see almost every new film that comes out, preferably at the imax because it has the best disabled spot, and the sound is truely awesome
our odeon is being turned into an odeon "lux" which means less screens, but better quality seats
the way my mum and I are looking at this is that if they are refurbing, it must be worth it to be staying open, idk if there are die hard cinema lovers like mum and me, but i'm pretty sure that we are not alone, maybe it is more in america that cinemas are dying?
I have a cinema disabled card though so my carer gets a free seat, but that means we only have to pay £10 for us both to see an imax film!
cheap time out for us really

They lowered the prices at one of my local cinemas to 99kr from 149kr... A last gasp attempt to get some bums on seats.

The last packed film I saw was Barbie....
Otherwise at best it's twenty or so people on a good day... It's crazy.
Furiosa 25, Dune pt2, 30 maybe....
That doesn't even pay staff wages. They must be hemorrhaging cash....

Thankfully kids have got respect here but when we go in London I just regret it everytime, ruined by a group of idiot kids just talking through or even a crying baby... The mind boggles.

I'll be amazed if there's cinemas in 20 years... Except maybe 1 chain.

the sound at I max is one of the best things about it, literally being moved by the sound is super awesome in films like Maverick, Dune2, furiosa etc, maverick won an oscar for the ffilm's sound, but I doubt that it was fully appreciateable outside of the imax ,even kong x godzilla was good sound in there not that it was a great film

we have an old twee cinema in Norwich, when we go and see a new twee film there, or thier christmass special movie, it's pretty much packed, can't see them going anywhere apart from doing better as more and more people reach that tweee age for movies like allelujah, men in a boat, one life, etc, all great movies btw!

Yeap, had the same in Dune - a family of about 5-6 with mum/dad and a few kids under 5 and a baby - Kids running about during the film (not their fault) and a baby crying through-out - What mental deficiency do people have nowadays where two adults with enough brain power to create a number of kids still think what they did was acceptable, literally ruining the experience of hundreds (packed cinema) of people.........................and we wonder why "cinema" is dying!
