Death row final statements

It amazes me how many of them still protest their innocence in their last statement. Is this that they truly werent guilty, or is it that they've convinced themselves they werent?

If i had done something terrible like a murder, and i was just about to be executed, you may as well say "You know what, i did it, i was lying to save my backside" as theres no point carrying on the charade anymore, unless they've said it so long they've convinced themselves?

Well some of them may be telling the truth, quite a few prisoners have been executed and later found to be innocent.

Have you seen the list of statements which turned out to be a list of innocent men executes for crimes which it turned out later they didn't commit for a fact?.

Gives a different side to the usual horn tooting you see on here.

Got a book about death row inmates at home, it lists their crime, has their mug shot, their sentence - how long they served before execution and a bit of a personal bio on it as well as their last meal. Interesting reading, it's amazing how so many of them commit the crime young and die before their my age.. saddening too. Oddly compulsive reading though as it's not just a list.

Looking at the site the OP has posted, shocked at how few whites are executed these days, the numbers are definitely dropping compared to other races (no doubt for various reasons!)

Just wondering, can EU national be put on death penalty if he committed a serious crime in the USA??

Well, that "drug trafficking" mother is still on death row somewhere (Not the USA I realise) isn't she?

I imagine the UK government would intervene a lot more successfully if it was the US mind you.

If you are already in US custody then I would imagine that there is not a lot that the UK Government / EU would be able to do about it other than issue some form of diplomatic protest or a plea for clemency.

If you managed to make it out of the US and back to the EU before being arrested and charged then you could use the possibility of being given the death penalty to block / delay extradition to the US through the courts.

From some of those statements you get the feeling that they realised they did wrong and repented of their actions. It is horrible to imagine what must be going through their minds on those final few steps, but also it is horrible to imagine what they put their victims and their families through :(

One mistake in the judgement and its literally game over.

I don't agree with that :(

I'm against the death penalty. They should be forced to live out the rest of the miserable lives doing hard labor. Killing them is letting them off too easy - and most of them seem to think they're going to heaven anyway! Work them into the ground I say - at least get something useful out of them.

To be honest, I'm surprised so many people are that keen on the idea of the state having the power to execute citizens.

I'd have thought that the left would be against it for obvious moral reasons & the right against it due to disliking excessive government authority. (on average)

As let's face it, it's as authoritarian as you can get.

interesting and creepy.
its a shame you cant make prison profitable with work of some description

I think overall i agree with the death penalty but on in very serious/confirmed cases, but is anything guaranteed?

I agree completely and don't see why it can't be done (other than troublesome human rights). Take away their PlayStation's and gym equipment, teach them how to do something useful for the government and take their pay to pay for their stay.
