What do you about the innocent tax payer slaving daily to feed and house criminals who sit in jail reading porno mags, eating, drinking and lifting iron whilst someone somewhere (if they are lucky enough to be alive) re-lives a nightmare?

The death penalty is more expensive directly to the taxpayer, and indirectly it seems to have no effect on reduction of crime rates.

As for someone re-living a nightmare, killing the person who did it will not erase history.

Instinctively the death penalty seems like the right idea, when you look at how it actually works out, it is not.

Right. Revenge does nothing, and if someone is so broken by being a victim of a crime that all they have left is a desire for revenge.. then it's tragic but it doesn't justify it.

Funnily enough, it seems this is far more fitting to have the attitude of:

Revenge doesn't change anything, this, I suppose it on the assumption that they are actually being dealt with by the legal system appropriately.

The US decides what someone's human rights are, subject to their constitution (and interpretation of).

I think it's better to say we're going to kill you once you've exhausted all right of appeal, rather than we're going to kill you in 3 months regardless if your appeal is done.

Their system is an abortion though. The death penalty only works in theory, and the chances are that if we ever advance society to the point where we could realistically implement it then we'd have so little crimes which would earn the death penalty it's probably still be better to keep people in prison for life.
