Just a topic to remember some old games and their makers.

What do people consider to be the biggest / most well known game developer, studio or publisher to go defunct? And what games did they make?

One I mourn the most was Looking Glass Studios. (System Shock, Thief and a substantial part of the driving force behind Deus Ex 1 and some Origin Systems games).

nah was a whole mixture of things... and the industry moving towards more "playing it safe" commercial models for game development.

Ion Storm was largely made up of ex-looking glass people so same deal applies really :D

Yeah, I thought they had a closely linked history. Iirc, was Ion Storm Romero's company? He specifically wanted Warren Spector to help manage Deus Ex development; though I have rarely if at all heard of any praise given to Romero for the success of the game. Not sure why?

Definitely Looking Glass. Didn't they do Terra Nova too?

Also Pandemic Studios, purely for that genre bending wonder that was Battlezone 2.

psygnosis

Still exist mate, they just changed their name and were bought by Sony. Still making epic games in the form of Wipeout though :D

They also made an utterly amazing Formula 1 game for the PS3 but unfortunately Codemasters won the bid for the licence after that and their product is nowhere near as good imo :(

Well I don't know about biggest, but the company I mourn the most would be Particle Systems who developed the Independence War series - as we all know, the best space sims ever made. ;)
