Delayed purchase of PC games

Anyone else the same?

Nope, buy my games at launch. Pick up odds and ends during Steam sales etc.

Why? Because I enjoy playing games when they are topical, and people are discussing them on and offline. I enjoy pre-ordering and looking forward to the games being released. Not just for the PC, but also for my 360 & ps3.

For me the thought of saving a tenner here and there doesn't outweigh the enjoyment I get from buying new games. I don't see the point with investing money in a modern PC gaming rig, or games consoles and not playing the games that I want when they come out.

I'm also a film enthusiast so I always pick up my blurays at launch, but not so bothered about doing so for music or books. Unless from a favourite artist or author.

I have only 1 game pre-ordered on PC (Doom3 BFG) & will buy Deadlight from Steam in 2 weeks apart from that I have little interest in paying full price for anything else in 2012 I can wait for player reviews/digital sales nothing grabs me as must have the end of the DX9 era is approaching rapidly the PC needs to have a lot more content which takes better advantage of the hardware until that happens I do not see much change in the poor state of affairs right now :(

Nice sentence. Do you hate your audience? :(

At the moment, I find that I am not buying games at launch (with a few exceptions) and seem to find this is rather beneficial.

A. When I do buy a game, I get them cheaper in a sale or something similar.
B. When I do buy them, they come with all the dlc's and have had a lot of bug fixes applied to them already.

Thanks too the steam sales, I have a bunch of older games I bought for cheap which I'm playing, like Borderlands (bought for £4) (which is awsome)

Anyone else the same?

I used to be like you until I bought Diablo 3 on launch.

Boy do I regret it  most buggy server maintenancy game every! Made the single biggest mistake assuming, meh it's Blizzard!

Haven't played in 2 months :(, maybe next year

But yea, otherwise in the same boat as you

If I'm keen to play a new release then I'll buy it at release, couldn't give a stuff about price drops further down the line, could be dead by then.

I think it all hinges on how much you value community aspects (multiplayer, active chatter and excitement on forums etc). I'm not too fussed so I predominantly play games over a year old - currently I'm playing Timeshift; immediately prior to that I completed Halo 2, Battlefield 3 (a new game!) and Dark Sector.

Key benefits are:
-Cheaper games
-Fully patched up (arguably even more important now DLC is commonplace)
-Better performance i.e. spend £xxx on hardware today will run the games better than spending £xxx a few years ago.
-3rd party tweaks available i.e mods, widescreen optimisation
-Good variety of walkthroughs etc if you get stuck

I only pre order games I know I will put the time into,

for example I abused gears of war 1 so I pre ordered the second, which was a massive dissapointment.

That is the last game I have pre-ordered, i'm not that bothered on waiting anymore.

Same here, only game I've bought at launch recently was CS:GO, having beta'd it extensively before hand, I don't think I've bought a game aside from that for near-on a year now, got such a massive back log that I'm not doing a particularly great job of working through.

I haven't bought more than two or three games a year for quite a while now and very rarely buy them when they are launched unless it's had a demo or it's from a company I trust to fix the bugs that always seem to ruin most games these days.

The only game I will buy over the next year even if I don't see a demo would be Arma3, I know it will probably have more bugs than an Amazon jungle but I've always found BIS the be the best games company I've ever dealt with.

Yep, it's got to be something very special for me to drop money on it at launch. I think the last time I did that was with RAGE as it looked fantastic but turned out to be very "meh".

This,
But xcom and before that) SWTOR (what a waste)
Thinking of buying fallout 2 next for some classic goodnes.

Also in devlopment indie games are good value, KSP for $10

Last game I got at full price was Skyrim and just pledged some cash for Project Eternity

Apart from that, I usually just pick games up on special offers as I already have a backlog to clear

Only buy games that I will actually play for long time. I don't go out my way to buy deals here and there either tho since I enjoy sticking with one game.

Anyone else the same?

Yep, exactly the same.

I tend to complete about 99% of games I buy as soon as I buy them, and frankly having no/less bugs, tasty dlc and it being a bargain, price wise, is pure win.

The only exceptions for me is stuff like Guild Wars 2 and console games like Tales of x which they never make enough of.

Last game I pre-ordered was MOH-Airborne.
EA promised big, riding on the wave of Allied Assault, Spearhead and Breakthrough. Promised mod support, dedicated servers all of the good stuff the multiplayer community had been enjoying for three releases previously.

Instead EA delivered a broken game ported from a console with a rather 'RTCW uber soldiers' level bosses. And as if they recognized this, they promptly declared no further patch support for the game.

In some ways I think EA have done me a favor by ensuring I never buy another title on release date, no matter how enticing the pre-game hype is.

I've just bought Sniper Elite V2 (not without it's problems) but at least I've not been stiffed for the full whack just released price.

I must say I do dislike the move to digital distrubution and this has reduced the amount of games I can be bothered to buy. This might seem odd but back when it was being developed it was heralded as being great for the consumer - more convenient and because the price paid no longer had to pay for warehouses, shipping, bricks and mortar shops and staff to sell them, games would be cheaper too.

Whereas all thats happened is that we can't really buy games on the high street anymore and instead we simply pay more than we've ever paid before for no box, no disc, no manual and no ability to flog it on when you've finished.

Only games im looking forward to are sc2 heart of the swarm, dota2 and rocksmith. Other than that any others will be purchased like said by others in thread, probs about a year after release.
