I see what you're saying, but my main point is that its only a couple of £ anyways, to me thats nowhere near enough to get even remotely annoyed over.

Well - nice to know that you have money to burn when I can barely afford to eat atm - I hate being a student :s

But really... it's not about the amount of money - it's the principle... and if they get away with forcing you to pay £10 you shouldn't have to... then why not £100, £1000, £10,000 etc... it sounds extreme but it will happen that way.

If you were to rent a film from Blockbuster and then take it back a week or so late, accruing some late fees in the process, then went back on a seperate occasion to rent another film, what would you expect to happen?

Last time I did that I found that my account had been suspended until I paid the late fees.

I know youve said theres a few problems with that comparison but IMO its not even close. You ggive you card details to Microsoft to pay your xbox live membership, you can do this via your xbox, however IIRC you actually need ot ring them to tell them to cancel the payments or else they just keep taking the months payments without your permission. IMO your account shouldb be dropped to silver automatically after your months payment is up, and then you pay again to up it back up to gold.

If you want to get really anal then Blockbusters contact you to remind you once your items are 2 days overdue, and contact doing so until they are 15 days overdue then your card is charged or debt collection takes over the matter. I dont think microsoft send you anything at all to say your membership expires in X days, the next months payment will automatically be taken unless you cancel the subscription.

Im at least 95% sure they email you in advance to warn you its about to expire and be renewed automatically.

I stand corrected then :)

I refuse to give them my card details and buy everything from a store so I cant say i know first hand :)

I had the exact same thing happen to me. It said my account had being suspended and I had to renew or modify my membership details. I followed the menus as I wanted to become a Silver member and it said "No other memberships at this time try back later" for several days. I think its just a scam and they don't intend to let anyone go back to silver without a carry on. Essentially they forced me into gold or nothing. On a side note though I'm pretty sure I only paid 4,99 not the whole 39,99.

hi all ive got the exact same problem had my cc details my card went out of date and didn't supply any new ones as i don't use it all the time and thought it would just go back to silver and i could put it back to gold when i wanted to use it well guess i was wrong now i can't get to market place or my friends list at all just says the account has expired please pay how crap is that!!!! :(

Mate, the comparison was to show what companies do once the debt has been accrued. i.e. account suspended until you settle up, which happens in both cases, so it is at least a little close. ;)

How do you know MS hadn't contacted him over the course of the 2 months? He was away after all.

I got 2 emails...one saying my membership was up for renewal, and the second saying my gold membership had been cancelled, nothing about billing violations and my account being shut down.

When I got the email about gold subscription being cancelled I naturally assumed everything was peachy.

yer, i thought your account simply defaulted back to silver if your payment didnt go through.

I don't mean to be offensive, but people put their 'principles' ahead of common sense way too much.

I don't have money to burn myself, but I just dont let things like this get so negative that I care. I would rather be a broke man than an angry man.

They have done the exact same thing to me, ive asked every question in the book, it makes no sense at all. Its absolutely stupid. Ive said ill pay for a year and the answer is still a shrug of the shoulders. They seem to think that a credit card going out of date is something to punish? wtf!

It may only be a couple of £.... or forty, but it's still wrong of Microsoft to have been accumulating the charges on the account. When they were unsuccessful in getting the payment they should have downgraded the account. It's not as if Microsoft really need the couple of £ anyway.

I'd be contacting John Staplegun and his dodgy Scottish wife - Watchdog seem to like slating Microsoft these days.
