Delidding 4770K

After re-applying liquid metal as thin as possible and a tweak of settings I now have my 4770k running at 4.8ghz using 1.285v with a max temp on Prime/Ibt of 75.c after hours of testing. Gaming it barely touches 60.c.
With the liquid metal I have found spreading it as thin as physically possible makes quite a difference.
De-lidding and using liquid metal for me has lost nearly 20.c which is nice.

WOW, that's unbelievable  I run an AMD FX8350 . . . Can these be Delidded at all? As after reading about this Delidding malarkey it always seems to be Intel CPU's that people mess with.

Amd cpu's are soldered like intels high end chips. Its only the mid range Ivybridge and haswell chips that use paste and benefit from delidding.

Ah right ok, that'll explain why I've never seen any references to De-lidding AMD CPU's then. Thanks for clearing that up :) At least that saves me having to dig deep into my bravery bag and attempt anything like this on my CPU, phew ;)

You put the CPU in the socket then carefully line it up before closing the socket clamp. This then holds it securely. Some who delid do secure it back onto the chip with adhesive though.

I don't think its possible with an air cooler to go direct die. EK however do make a direct die kit for use with their waterblocks. And msi have a similair thing on there high end Z97 boards. Though I'm unsure as yo wether it is for use with air coolers or again water blocks only.

I know most people use the liquid metal stuff but as I'm too chicken, I presume a decent paste like a GC Extreme etc will also be fine?

I have liquid metal on the die (Inside) and MX-4 on the heat spreader to heat-sink. I actually found using MX-4 on the heat spreader to heat-sink worked better than liquid metal.

Use liquid metal!

Raystorm blocks will fit on a naked die without the EK kit ;)
As mentioned above though... the temp difference is minimal and oddly, I saw greater core temp variation when naked compared to have the IHS back on with liquid metal either side :)

I don't like what the liquid metal did to the CPU you bought, I wouldn't have been able to fix it like you did. Obviously on the die it's probably a bit different but I do worry about putting too much on even if I've watched a thousand videos by now. Mine won't be naked, I shall be putting the IHS back on :) Thanks for the link.

Blimey look how well NT-H1 does, it's virtually identical to liquid metal. And look at MX-4 all the way down there even bellow AC5!

Generally got the impression MX-4 was better than AC5 and Liquid Metal was way out ahead. Never thought NT-H1 would be up there with the best either, with it being noctua I didn't expect it to be rubbish but I didn't expect to see it up there with the best either. I'm actually using it now for the first time since I got the D14 years ago becasue my 4 year old tube of MX-3 seemed a bit dry, was going to get some MX-4 but don't think I'll bother now.

I think if I delid it will be NT-H1 bellow and above the IHS and if I'm not happy with temps try Liquid Metal bellow IHS.

ive used liquid pro on both the die and between cooler

ive used mx4 on the die and it did nothing to improve temps, complete waste of time

you want the best on the die/between cooler and that is liquid pro imo

I have ordered some LP as advised, it really shouldn't be difficult to do. I'll use some PK1 on the IHS as I got some free with my 4790k and they're much of a muchness. I don't want to use LP on the IHS as I think I'll struggle to sell a pockmarked CPU in years to come.

Pk1 is pretty decent stuff for use on the ihs. Currently got mx4 on mine as its all I could get at short notice.
