Dell U2711..is it worth the money?

Anything newer than A01 I've read...

Does your 6970 not have DVI? You get a cable in the box...

Yeah it has DVI , i just thought Display port would be better but looking at the quality of the cables around i dont think i will buy one of those, stick with dvi-dvi or try the one i have now which is dvi-hdmi as that is the only quality input i have on my viewsonic.

does the monitor have any speaker built in or do you need the sound bar

Yes i believe I have the A09 revision which i bought in Jan and I believe that it is the latest revision.

You'll get dvi display port vga cables. Not sure about mini to standard. You could buy a display port to hdmi adapter.

IIRC, mine is A09 too - can't be sure though, I only remember noticing it was quite a few higher than the base, but not double figures... so 7/8/9 - bought from here at the end of Jan, so likely A09.

A quick google shows you can get mini -> full dp cables.

On an older 24" 1920x1200 Hyundai monitor, the HDMI signal quality was noticeably worse than DVI. However, that could have been the scaler and/or video card.

I would just use the included dual link DVI cable... displayport offers no improvement in signal quality as far as I'm aware.

How much am I going to be looking for one of these secondhand?

£400-450

Sorry to hijack slightly, but has the U2711 ever dropped below its current price?

Im torn between this and the Dell 30 inch but not sure if the increase in screen size is worth the premium. My Hyundai 241D is starting to play up (but still managing to get it to work somehow) and am thinking of upgrading in the near future.

Other than some rare combination of quidco and dell offers, no.

I've had 3 30s and prefer the U2711, I think the size is just right at my viewing distance of ~60-80cm.

For the price difference, definitely not worth it - heck, you can nearly buy two U2711s for the price of a single 30.

What made you get rid of the 30s? as the first OCUK adopter of the Hyundai i think i have lasted the longest!

I would ideally like to get the screen in a months time as its just too distracting to get right now (exam in 3 weeks!). Money isn't so much an issue but i think the 30 inch is just too overpriced for what it is.

think i will wait a month and see what its like then - just afraid of the price going up!

EDIT -sorry for the triple post

Sounds like you're expecting it to look different than it is... it's not a gloss finish of any sort... it's a haze that seems to be generated by the panel.

I saw them both turned off and turned on. The U2711s just look like matt finish monitors when turned off from what I recall. When turned on I didn't see any difference from any other type of matt finish.

Got a rediculously good deal, bought 1 for me & 2 to sell on - couldn't resist 'testing' the other two to make sure they worked ;) Lost interest in PC gaming for a while, so sold the other... this was a couple of years ago and i've only recently got back in to PC gaming.

Let me guess with the Hyundai - power button still beeping but failing to turn the blasted thing on? I un-fondly remember the days of turning it off and on by the switch on the back multiple time to get it to actually power up :S Happened to the two warranty replacements as well.

I would have thought that it's caused by the monitor's light passing through the AG coating, just the same as any other screen that has matt finish/AG coating and can suffer the same issue.

As I said, I didn't notice any issue when they were on and there must have been 10-15 of them that I was ogling :)

That's because, as I tried to explain, you saw it in a bright light environment - what the AG coating is specifically designed for.

The haze is caused by the light coming out of the monitor being refracted by the AG coating. Most noticeable in low-light environments.

In other words, the monitor was designed for office use rather than home use.

It is a very effective anti glare (anti reflection) coating - so yes, of course it will appear matte, it is! :p

Even in dark light - it's not that bad - it's just where it's most noticeable.

Ah, back to the dwarves. Yes, I have the lights on when gaming and generally using the computer, actually, I never have the lights off when using the computer, and I have a north/east facing window without curtains.

Thanks for the explanation, and forbearing my ignorance. I was under the impression it was a phenomenon that manifested itself in general usage, from the way that people were moaning about it; and thus why I wanted to see one before committing to buying one.

Edit: I hope that this answers any questions for Reddev too regarding the AG coating as he mentioned it above.

Yep thats the one! might keep it as a second monitor though.

Looks like the U2711 is the one to get then :)

Fairy muff... personally, I found it slightly noticeable in a medium-lit environment... more prominent the darker it became.

But, it wasn't an issue - just noticeable - a tiny compromise on a fantastic screen.

After a week of use, I don't notice it anymore unless looking for it - it's something you get used to very quickly and it doesn't spoil the viewing experience at all - colours vibrant, great contrast in dark images/games and nice for general viewing.

I get what you mean though, with the amount of people making a big fuss over it, I was expecting it to be much more prominent. In reality, it's a non-issue and certainly not something that should stop anyone from buying this wonderful monitor.

Hated that blasted thing.

The final replacement and when I just couldn't be bothered anymore I just replaced it came with an absolutely horrific panel. It's still sitting next to my desk, I don't even want to hook it up as a third monitor I hate it that much.

It came with some ludicrous coating that affected the viewing angles; when sitting straight in front of it - the top edge of the screen would have a haze that could make text illegible. Some god-awful AG coating, I can see why any one would complain about that - it severely impacted my viewing experience. Stupid Hyundai/repairtech!

From recent posts of mine, it's probably clear that I loathe LED backlights... I actually chose to have an LED backlit benq as my second monitor instead of the CCFL Hyundai... it's just that bad! I will never be buying Hyundai again or any monitor company that's warranty backed by repairtech.

Can't praise the U2711 enough - and it's even backed by an industry leading warranty and pixel guarantee... no one will regret buying it unless they need 120Hz IMO.

Stupid question probably but... If I buy a u2711 second hand.. What happens if it develops a fault? Anyway of buying extra warranty or whatever? Would the costumer service be nice to you?

They wont do anything. You're probably better off waiting for a good deal than buying second hand. I got cheaper than second hand new from dell. Try ebay, usually refurbished ones come with a years warranty. Or try itcsales they have it for £454 3 month warranty.
