Dell Vostro 1500

i had always slated dell but after seeing the vostro specs etc I figured I wasnt going to get the same anywhere else from a different manufacturer, extremely suprised at the quality of the laptop, i expected it be be a bit cheaper feeling really. When i went to my parents with it my dad was even shocked that I had bought a dell, nevermind was chuffed to bits with one!

actually scrap that i found out, its not cheap :o but it is pretty much the top mobile processor. i presume most intel core 2 duo 800fsb cpu's that are fitted on dell machines are removable yes? there not soldered on or anything?

simon that was too much competitor info so your post has been deleted :)

most of us lot rang up and struck deals. just like everything else prices generally fluctuate depending on companys. much like how ocuk stick stuff on offer for a while and then they go up in price not long after. Its just the way the market is.
If you cant strike a deal you are better off waiting.

Im actually concidering selling my 1500 now, iv hardly used it and mostly got it for my dissertation, iv now completely changed my idea so nolonger require such a high spec laptop.

What specs were you looking for? Im something like 2.0, 1440x900,2gb,9cell,8600GT

Whoops, sorry about that.

Funny thats the spec im after. My email addy is [email protected] if you want to email me with a price your after or vice versa.

well im only concidering it at the mo, i only got it in november and iv hardly used it, though iv got it packed up with me at the mo since im spendin a weekend at uni and my pcs currently at home(since im still supposed to be off for xmas).
Its a stonking laptop so im thinking it over hard first.

Im not too sure we are aloud to discuss trading between ourselves in the forums outside of the member market, so expect your post and maybe even mine to be deleted again :)

Ok no probs, although its abit heavy to lug around with you isn't it. ;) didn't even realise there was a members market but I've just read I need 250 posts. Be a while before I get that many. :(

its not too bad really, iv got a decent backpack and it really only comes with me when my main rig isnt local. Like i took it to london when i went to visit my sister there in the car(from up north), and iv got it now because my rigs at home and im at my uni flat.
It doesnt really bother me in the backpack, but it sure does get heavy when its with a big bottle of water(obviously thats got its own pouch in the bag:D) external hard-drive, other bits n bobs, lots of paperwork etc heh.
The membermarket is your friend :) i just look on it all the time, just incase theres anything i want for the crack. heh.

does anyone elses vostro randomly beep and stuff at you? mine just did and im not sure why, battery warning? it has done it before when the battery was full as well though...

Look under monitors in device manger, Details>hardware ids. Mines a new 1500, has a AUO and its perfect (so far).

Which screen do you have ?

1680?

The AUO are supposed to be the worse ones by all accounts. Reassuring if you find yours perfect.

Mine should be with me tomorrow and the only thing thats concerning me is the screen.

hm im in device manager and cant find a details to get onto hardware id. darn vista ;x

**edit** was having a bit of trouble last night outputting to 720p on HDTV, iv never actually been able to output the res with my PC plugged into it but the laptop was being a hassle with my having to try repeatedly to get 1280x1024(i know, wierd, sure its not a one of those tvs and a true 720, 1280x1024 doesnt look like native res.)
Is the 8600 capable of the HD output etc that the desktop card is? Its over VGA i know, which technically means its not HD since its not a HD connection. But its just annoying me a bit, as it letterboxes and doesnt look as clear as it should.
When i did finally get 1366x768 set and displaying i was missing my taskbar etc, Ill figure this is because of the processing, as its 720p, not 768p. I guess im asking does anyone know howto stop this rubbish happening, or set 1366x720 manually on the laptop? Im on vista and have relatively recent drivers from laptopvideo2go.

Anyone tried oc'ing their machine?

:D

Hadn't really bothered until now but I've overclocked the 8600m gt from 475/950/400 stock to 650/1300/500, after about an hour of gaming with no problems I've settled on this speed until I have time to push further.

The speed increase is very impressive from an overclock; 19x12, everything max, no aa on css and I get 110fps in the stress test, an avg. of 50-60 fps on busy hdr maps and 100-150 on very busy non hdr maps, a massive increase from 23-33fps on hdr maps and 60-90 very spiky fps on non hdr maps which were a pain to game on.

cnc3 is now smooth with everything on max, 19x12 and no aa.

The only other game I have on this machine is bioshock which now gets a relatively smooth 30-70 fps at 19x12 with most settings on high and some on med. 16x10 is much smoother and allows high settings.

The core and shaders are clocked faster than a stock 8700m gt which is quick so I'm very impressed with what this gpu has shown so far considering its level of mobility. :D:D

Are you running Vista or XP, and what Nvidia drivers are you ising?

I've not used mine in a while, but I was trying to find some good OC'ing drivers but didn't have much luck- some wouldn't let me OC, some would let me actually wouldn't change speed, etc

Cheers

Anyone point me to a decent modded Nvidia driver thats better than the standard dell driver.

I have a problem with poor H264 performance ( Hardware Pure Video )
Also is there a fix for the backlight being on full when the unit comes out of suspend?

Whats the advantage of a modded driver over a standard one?
I presume it allows you to change certain things?
