Dell Vostro 1500

thanks ;) no use to me now mind lol.

Laptopvideo2go is where i get my drivers, all versions of xp+vista there :) spot on!

2stepsteve, see if you can barter a free upgrade for the 2 from a 1.6 on phone!

They mod em so theyll work on our 8600m fine, though theres certain sets that are different in the sense that some were desktop drivers modded to work with our cards, and others are mobile card drivers modded to work with ours. Just get recent ones, you cant go wrong then can you :)

OK I'm joining this club too :D

Just put an order in for a 1500 with Vista Premium, 8600M, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD and the WXGA+ truelife screen (had to go for that one or the order would have been delayed until 8th Feb)

Had to order on the phone as Vista Premium is not one of the options available on the website. Took quite a long time (15 min phonecall), but we got there in the end :)

Can't wait to get my hands on this. Has been about 2-3 years since I've had a good enough machine to play games on (my trusty old SN45G). Got quite a big backlog of good games to buy and get through (Oblivion, Orange box, Stalker, Bioshock Crysis etc).

:D

I ordered mine on Wednesday

2Ghz
2GB
8600M GT
1400x900 Panel

For £560 delivered

I wasn't sure to go with the M1350 instead, but in the end decided on the vostro 1500. M1350 is out of my budget, hopefully i'll be happy with the vostro!

Im just about to flog my vostro 1500 with the same specs, the vostro is great if you dont want to play games, or older games only, the sexeh silver persuaded me its time to swop.

I won't be playing the latest games with it, just ones that are 2 or so years older. My current Acer laptop scores only 300 points on 3Dmark06 .. so the power of the 8600M GT will be a big change!

you will be, same spec as mine :) Decent screen etc, plays cod4 well :p

Thats good :)

Do you like the screen? Do you overclock it, if so what kinda 3Dmark06 scores do you get?

How come its not good for games?

The vostro uses DDR2 RAM inside the 8600GT instead of DDR3 RAM.. giving the M1530 about 1000 points gain in 3DMark06 compared to the vostro

The 8600GT ddr2 just dosent really cut the mustard for anything newish, I tried stuff like UT3 on mine with low detail and it ran poor, it cant even muster WOW at 1440x900 with full detail. To be honest im not expecting the M1530 to be much better, but hopefully it should let me play wow at a nice level.

Have you tried any different graphic drivers rather than the standard Dell ones? :)

mine runs cod4 at an extremely acceptable level, and im used to playing it on my core2duo 2.7 & 8800GTS which is heavily overclocked.. so I know how it can run.

Was messing about with Ubuntu 7.10 and everything seemed to work out of the box apart from sound which is sorted by bringing up the terminal and typing -

sudo apt-get install module-assistant (useless cause you already have it if it's not the first time you do the trick)
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

If anyone wants to stick ubuntu on it.

You should definately try the modded drivers, my laptop is running WoW 40 fps in Shattrath and 60 everywhere else in full detail at 1280x800. I found the new drivers make a huge difference, currently playing TF2 and got a 5-10fps increase.

Where did you get your driver from?

Just got off the phone to the delivery company (Walsh Western) to be told that the delivery driver thought that I didn't live at the provided address any more, so the delivery was canceled!

Having read the delivery log I can't help thinking that the guy got stuck in traffic so just gave up and went home:
History Date Time Location Activity
29/01/08 12:25 BPO - GREENFORD ADDRESS QUERY.
29/01/08 11:57 BPO - GREENFORD ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT.
29/01/08 07:05 BPO - GREENFORD ORDER ON DELIVERY.
29/01/08 06:44 BPO - GREENFORD FIRST BOX SCANNED INTO HUB.
29/01/08 06:44 BPO - GREENFORD ORDER COMPLETE IN DEPOT.

I don't understand why they didn't just call me if they were unsure on the address

I'm pretty hacked off because I'd taken the day off from work to receive the delivery and now I have to give up my Saturday morning to wait for the re-delivery.

Not a happy bunny
